Ours is surrounded by cabinets, but here is what the side view of our stainless/glass hood looks like

I have a Zephyr.

A pro style SS canopy hood would be a good choice with your traditional cabinets.

Love those styles but unfortunately mine will need to be vented through the wall not the ceiling.

This is the style I was thinking, but I dont know how it would look from the side view is my concern.

This one looks like it wouldnt stick out too much, what do you think about the style for my kitchen.

The style is good but it has to function. You need the capture area to be deep enough.

I have one like that vented out the back. Not sure of the angle you are looking to view.

jn, yes that similar style to the one I am thinking of. My cabinets there are only 12" deep there. Could you take a photo for me from the other side so I can see how much it sticks out from the cabinet so I can see if I like the look? TIA

I had a very similar cabinet configuration and replaced my OTR microwave with a hood like you have pictured.

I am very picky but had no issue with the depth of the hood blending with the rest of my kitchen. Yes, it stuck out over the stove but it was high enough that it didn't interfere with my cooking. And the side view was fine. The hood depth worked with the stove and the hood design was simple and did not look out of place.

This is about as far back as I can get. I love this hood, because it vents out right there.

One caveat, you do have to watch your head while cooking. That goes for all of them though, especially if you had the microwave combo before.

This is ours. It's just a Broan. Because we have the taller uppers there we couldn't go with the ones from previous posters. Well, I could have but dh would have bashed his head in.

Does yours vent through the ceiling? Does the vent duct go straight up? If it is not exactly straight, you may not be able to use one of the chimney style vent hoods.

The chimney type vents can vent to roof or wall. That's why the good lord invented elbows.

Ours would vent through the wall. I know venting through the ceiling could be done, but I would have to remove the top cabinets and try and find the backsplash tile to finish off that wall, so it would be too much for DH. At this point, I am happy he is with me on replacing the OTR microwave with a ss hood.

We went to a kitchen place that had all kinds of hoods displayed above the stoves. Believe or not, I really liked that they did stick out with that canopy look. I think I am comparing the look of my OTR microwave and hate the way it sticks out because it SHOULDNT stick out so much because that space wasnt properly planned out, but these hoods are meant to stick out. HAPPY HAPPY!!

Casey, we initially had ours vented via the former water heater route, but that required an elbow and made for a very noisy fan. Eventually had the HVAC guy create a new attic vent that went straight up. Made a world of difference.

This is the hood I am thinking of buying. The sizing is a bit smaller than some, I like that it has baffle filters instead of mesh. There are no reviews on this brand. What do you think?

Is that price in US$-that's a lot of money for 450 cfm.

How many BTU does your gas stove pump out? I think you need 100 cfm for every 10,000 BTU the stove puts out.

Anything over 300-400 cfm (depending upon the code in your area) requires you to determine if you need to install a make up airflow.

This is in Canadian $. I have five burners, BTU range from 5 thousand to 17 thousand. This falls into DH trade so he will do what he needs to ensure we are in code for our area.

That's what I thought too Practigal. I have an XO with a higher CFM and it has halogen lights in the hood that makes for terrific lighting when using my cooktop. It was installed during my complete kitchen reno 3 years ago and it was less than a thousand.

Items cost more in Canada than in the US, we dont have the buying power that the states does. There are even more expensive ones, this ones falls kind of in the mid price range , if you are looking for baffle type filters instead of the mesh ones and as I said the sizing is a tad smaller in height and depth. Also this is the only one that seems to give the noise rating as, 69 decibels which doesnt seem too bad. Reading reviews on other models, noise was a complaint of many.

This is the one we got to save money. I like it. It is 400 cfm at the highest setting. I only use it on the second setting because the top setting is pretty loud. Unless I'm burning something...

The light is okay but not fantastic. Not sure what the price is in CA.

Mine is similar to the one you are considering. I have a very small kitchen. Mine sticks out 5 inches. Hope this helps...

I chose the Broan e661 30" model because it is affordable with 600cfm. We just moved in a week ago and so far I like it. It's very quiet on the lowest setting and moves enough air to make the gas burner flames dance even on that level. Even though the hood doesn't extend past the front of the range, it pulls steam when using the front burners. It has rounded edges which is nice because it won't hurt if your head bumps the corner...I'm too short to bump this one but my husband is 6'5".

You really shouldn't bump your head if the hood is placed high enough. I think the recommendation is about 28 - 30".

You're smart to get one with baffles. I had the Broan Lisa has and now I have a Broan chimney hood, which works about the same. I don't find them so great at removing odors and I hate using it on high for more than a few minutes because it's so loud.
