A few pictures of the "new" cottage garden

A couple years ago I ripped out much of the original cottage garden and replanted. The first garden was a little too "loose" for me. Especially in the fall with really tall grasses and other taller plants. I decided to bring it down a bit, tame it and plant more behaved plants. This also coincided with getting a new fence. I'm pleased with the results and glad I dug in (literally!) and made the change. The roses have just gone by. There are multiple orange roses in the garden now that look great with the purple tuteurs. For some reason I didn't take any pictures while they were in bloom!

Here's a more recent pic from a different angle. The roses are just about ready to get going again. Mid-late July is a good time in the garden! We're lucky that with our drought we've been able to water with our really excellent well which we never take for granted!

And a couple more.

And here are a couple large mosaic paving stones (2' x 2') I made for my back gardens which are more trees, shrubs, perennials and not as colorful. I'm going to do four total and here are the first two completed.

I love the dark centers and dark stems on the Doppelganger. It really sets off the pretty pink petals. Last year it didn't 'doppel' and it was really short. I thought I had been sold some short variety by mistake. I am so happy with them this year. Yes, isn't that Easter Lily something special? I didn't know they would or could cross with Asiatic lilies. Thank you all for looking and for your nice comments about the garden. Chickadee, you can add sulfur to change the PH to acid a bit faster and there is another chemical, I think it is aluminum sulfate that is really so strong I would be afraid to use it. I would love to add lime to get a purple color, but I also have azaleas close by and that would be the kiss of death for them. Peat Moss, Pine Straw, and oak leaves are all mildly acidic too. The purple blooms in front of the hydrangea belong to another clematis on a modified trellis...it is Romantika, and you can see a few pink blooms from Comtesse de Bouchard on it. Each year it should get fuller. Ashwa is also on the trellis, but blooms weren't showing in this picture. Plantmaven, I get most of my clematis from Debbie at Silver Star Vinery. I love the look and you can;t get it any other way that I know. I am constantly making little changes in the garden. kay

Nr 49 is a climbing lilly, 'gloriosa superba', subtropical. Nr 82 is a orchid, can't remember which one, but it is a beautiful one indeed. Nr 104 is a hypericum-species. Normally, the seedheads are black or dark, but this one gets beautiful coloured ones. Nice to read, that my photo's help you through a dull or early morning and that you enjoy what you see. Wow ! It looks fantastic ! You did such a nice job . I especially love the center of the garden . It's very inspiring ! I had built a similar obelisk but it hasn't been put in the garden yet because I don't know what to do with it . Did you build your own too ?

Thyme, it exudes nothing but charm, I'm drooling over your flagstone. If that doesn't say cottage the minute one sees it, I don't know what would. Now if I could just pick it up and drop it down here, sigh.....

Thank you, everyone! And we don't have any woodchucks this year so nothing is being mowed down! LOL!

LF, my wonderful brother made the tuteurs for me and DH painted them the purple. The garden wouldn't be the same without them.

Annette, before we even broke ground on the house I had the hardscape plan for the cottage garden. We started with pea stone, but that was a mistake for us with our snowy winters. My DH saw two pallets of stone as he passed a landscape place and we knew those were it! We have never seen this type of stone again since then. Glad we snapped them up as soon as we saw them.

What a beautiful layout and I love the purple on the tuteurs!! A great touch! The flagstone adds such a great touch as well :)

Very nicely done progression of bloom from the summer to late summer blooming plants, daylilies to rudbeckia. Love your mosaics!
