Ilex?

Prunus caroliniana is my guess. Looks evergreen to me. What do crushed leaves smell like?

fatamorgana, Another possibility, but leaves are substantially less rigid than the larger leaf Ilex varieties most common around here.

Dave, I see where P. caroliniana leaves can sometimes have those teeth on the margins, especially when young. Seems a very good possibility. We had a lot of distractions last winter, so my memory about whether or not it is evergreen could be wrong. Leaves do have a surprisingly sweet smell if that is any indication.

Well, crushed Prunus caroliniana leaves can have a faint smell of maraschino cherries. Birds spread these around and may be considered a weedy tree in the South, but I have seen some older specimens, limbed up that had a lot of character.

I'm growing it in my yard and love it. It is not hardy enough here to be much of a weed threat.

Of course yours could be something else altogether.

We're where the soil begins leaning alkaline just a few counties west of P. caroliniana's natural range, so don't commonly see them in our urban landscaping or nurseries. Though it does seem a good match... and an excellent excuse to buy a jar of maraschino cherries for a scent comparison. Pretty clear whatever it is, it must be moved. There are actually two of them growing against the house that I can pot up after vacation and try to keep alive long enough to confirm the ID. Thanks!
