I planted my gladioli too close together - in a pot.
Comments (4)I never fertilize my glads. The flower is already developed in the bulb and fertilizer is not needed to cause it to bloom. If the bulb is not of a sufficient size to bloom the fertilizer may be helpful to prepare it for next years bloom. Glads produce many small bulbs that will take a year or three to reach blooming size. If you have purchased bulbs they are very dependable bloomers, taking around 90 days from planting to bloom. Working with a lot of bulbs most gardeners will plant weekly to extend the blooming period. You don't say what you are using for planting medium but packaged mixes will be fertile enough and one of the problems of glads is growing too tall and falling over. Comments (8)a 6 inch trunk .. means a ball of about 3 feet round.. digging is the small part of that job.. believe it or not ... thereafter.. you have to hoik it out of the hole.. somehow lift it into a truck... etc.. 200 to 400 pounds ... is disc herniation a viable option ... there is no fine line between what CAN be done.. and what should be done ... you are within days of it being too late to do this ... if it is already leafed out.. do it in the fall ... the odds of success of a total novice on this size tree. i would put at 25% ... with experience.. 75% ... i have no clue what it would cost to hire out this job.. but i wouldnt be surprised in NJ.. 250 to $500 .... frankly .. tell your parents.. if they want it.. they can pay for it ... ken...See MoreDid I kill my Japanese Maple Crimson Queen?!!!
Comments (6)I bought a healthy Crimson Queen Lace-leaf Japanese Maple 4 weeks ago. After about 2 weeks I noticed that the leaves started wilting/drying and curling. When I touched the leaves they just fall down. This tree gets a lot of direct strong sun for 4-5 hrs per day. The soil in my area is very clayish. I dug a little soil around the tree to see if tree is drowning or suffocating and I saw that there was pool of water around it. Looks like the soil in my area is not draining but retains all water. Would this property of soil drown the tree? Do I need to move it somewhere else. Is it enough if I remove the tree add a little soil under it to increase the height and replant it in same place ? I also tried to break some small branches and it looks like some are brittle and they easily snap. The bark looks green. Please advise on options. I don't want this beautiful tree to die. Is there a test to tell if it is alive....See MoreRemoving shrub too close to japanese maple
Comments (1)Cut the pine off and leave the stump to rot in place (it will not come back) or cut it back part way, put a chain on it and pull it out with a truck. The second method assumes the maple will not come out with the pine, if it looks like that could, in fact happen then the pulling out would not be done....See Moreprivatejapanesemaplesanctuary
