Harvester ants near the vegetable garden - friend or foe?

last modified: 7 years ago

We have finished building our raised beds for our vegetable garden.

We have 25 acres and to my knowledge lots of fire ants but only 3 mounds (2 of which I think are the same colony) of harvester ants. 2 of these mounds are within 10 feets of my new garden and already the ants are busy inspecting every inch of the 600 sq. ft of beds. What I don't know is if these guys are going to cause a problem when I start planting seeds and growing vegetables.

We've lived peacefully with them for 8 years but they may have to go.

Will they get my buried seeds? Will they hurt the plants or the harvest on them?

If they need to go can someone advise some natural ways to kill these 2 mounds (most likely the same colony as they are only 6 feet away from each other and ants have a highway connecting the two).

If these guys won't harm anything (or actually help by eating insects or larvae or bad bugs) then I can leave them alone.
