Carpet on top of Wood Floor?

last modified: 8 years ago

We are renovating the TV room which is half basement and connected to garage. The bottom photo was how it was before. The floor is red unlike the rest of the house which is yellow oak (first pic) and we wanted carpet for this room because it's so cold. There was no wood floor under the bar but we removed it anyway which created two big holes. We thought it would be easy enough to remove the rest of the floor and bought a carpet and installation package (including wood floor removal).

The installation people came today and discovered that the wood floor is actually glued on top of old vinyl floor. The vinyl and glue layer broke like tile when they tried to use pry bar to lift a board revealing cement floor underneath. So the job is postponed until we make a decision about how to proceed.

Should we just fill the holes with plywood and put carpet on top? Or should we remove the whole mess? Or is there another way? We don't want to pay too much more than what we already paid for the carpet and installation. Please help us making the decision.
