Need help id'ing this plant by just its foliage
Comments (2)Wow, that was a quick reply! Looks like it may be Smilax ecirrhata, it is native to Michigan. Thanks jaynine for your help. This quote might explain why it disappeared: "Populations of this plant are threatened by the overpopulation of White-tailed Deer", from http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/woodland/plants/up_carrionflw.html - there are lots of deer in this nature center. Comments (12)Gang, I had this looked at by an arborist on Saturday and he indicated it is part of the root system from a poplar tree I cut down (last year or earlier this year, I can't remember). The recommendation is to grind the stump and poison the root system. That should go a long way to helping with this situation. Thanks again to everyone who chimed in on this thread. I really appreciate it. Bill...See MoreNeed help identifying issue(s) with Azalea 'Karen'
Comments (7)The truth is that evergreen azaleas are not really suited for Z5 climates unless they are grown in very protected niches and/or given winter shelter from burlap or other barriers. Labels and catalog listings make claims to the contrary and hide behind the "semi evergreen" ruse, but they all wind up looking just like yours after a typical Z5 winter. Your theories are logical and might apply if you lived in a warmer place, but plain old cold temperatures and wind are to blame, nothing else. Any flower buds set last year were probably killed. If you prune back to live wood, new growth will very likely emerge, but next winter will result in the same sort of damage. You can try barriers of burlap or evergreen boughs to protect from sun and wind, but this doesn't really do anything to modify deep cold. There are rhododendrons and deciduous azaleas which will grow and flower well in Z5, but Karen and other evergreen azaleas just won't....See MoreNeed help identifying issue/disease of rubber tree tineke
Comments (1)My rubber tree tineke that I ordered online looked fine the day it arrived and I immediately transplanted it to a new pot with drain holes. I did not watered as I want the plant to settle first on its new environment.A day after, I watered it thoroughly and misted the leaves. Then I saw a small brown spot near the leaf tip. As the days went by, the browning spread further and when I checked on the leaf underside, there are some grayish things underneath. They are circular and seem to be wet and oozing out from the leaf.I've attached a photo of the leaf in the comments below. Can you tell me what are those thingsunderneath the leaf? Is it some sort of fungi or bacteria that I should be worried about? Please give me advice on how to deal with it as I really want to grow the plant....See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
