I'd look at a dark brown. I think the black was too harsh.

Out of the two, I like the sienna.

I agree the black is too harsh, but if you like that direction charcoal gray is a good option.. I've never been a fan of the sienna but a gray brown mix would be pretty

What does everyone think of those shingles that have several different colors in them? Owen corning has what is called Summer Harvest....opinions please, thanks!

I like some of the brown tones in it but I think it's too busy for the size/style of your home.

I still think a gray brown mix would be pretty..like the weathered wood at the bottom, even barkwood, the first on the top would look nice.

I looked at the samples without having read luk's choices. I too picked bark wood and Weathered Wood. WW is first choice from the small samples.

Weathered wood is my favorite. Seems to work with everything.

I'm in the same boat but looking at Certainteed shingles.

I like the Barkwood for your house, or maybe weathered wood. I went to the shingle store and took home samples and ruled out many colours doing that. I also got addresses from our roofer to look at colours of roofs on houses.

I like the charcoal, unless you live in a "dark" place it does look lighter under the son. I dislike the brown look, looks like shoe polish to me. Years ago I did a huge addition to my house, my contractor asked me what color roof I wanted, I was contemplating brown because my siding was tan.. He looked a little unhappy, then I went to the store and noticed lots of brown roofs and didn't like it, I immediately came back to tell him make it charcoal. You might like the brown look, drive around looking for a similar house, see what looks good in person. If you go with brown, do the darker one to make your house stand out, the lighter one is too close to the house color.

cmarlin20, I agree we need to drive and look at actual houses! also we want a dark color, nothing light.....unfortunately that is all we do know!! I dont like the browns very well either....to me it doesnt do much for the house....maybe its just me!? Thanks!

Go with charcoal or maybe a soft black

I think the black is too harsh and so is the sienna. Look at the Owens Corning website, CertainTeed too-- they have many colors and tools to help you choose. I like a roof that is a subtle mix of colors (grey, tan, maybe a little blue or green) in medium tones -- for your house, one that tends more brown but not strongly so. Driftwood or teak appeals to me.

I am in zone 5 and it gets hot in summer -- It is actually better, I think, to have a lighter roof to reflect heat in summer than to have a dark roof to collect heat in winter (because, with the low angle of the sun, you don't really gain much heat from the roof and you can add insulation to conserve heat; while cooling the house --at least in my area-- costs more than heating). It doesn't have to be super light, just not a dark brown, grey or black.

I have a house similar color only stone, and it has a black roof. Previous owners installed it. I hate it. Brown would look 100 percent better. Our last house had charcoal, and I wouldnt choose that either.

I'm sure that brownwood will be just fine.

We are also getting a new roof (Certainteed Landmark shingles) and I actually called Certainteed to get their opinion. They were very helpful at discerning the specks of colour in the shingle (ie, Driftwood is more 'watery' neutrals like blue and green, and Weathered Wood is more 'earthy' neutrals with grey and brown).

So they were a big help and we made our final decision based on that (we had driven around to look at a million houses, got samples from the roofing stores etc)

Thats a big help! we have done the same thing...its such a BIG investment I hate to make a BIG mistake...on computer you really cant tell.....our doors have the kinda orangey color that the shingle has just hope its not too orange!

It looks really nice!!!. I think what's missing is a more layered look of plants in the flower bed. Maybe you should add some thing with a little height to it.

That roof looks great! I can see how the colours all tie in.

I would also spray paint the star a rusty red so it will show more. It really doesn't stand out on the brick in it's current color which looks more copper in the picture. (the copper is pretty but you need red there)

I would also consider opening the bed up in front of the stairs to add flowers as well. The house is beautiful, but the landscape is what's lacking. I would actually post a thread in the landscape forum to get some ideas of how you can build the landscape up a little. Put a plan together and just do a little bit every season..
