I likely would have seen some fruit this year, but the Easter freeze last year killed all my vines to the ground, then the severe drought and starving deer killed the new growth back repeatedly, so it will likely be another year or two for them to recover. The hardy kiwi, A. arguta, is wind and insect pollinated. The male can probably be quite a long way away and still pollinate the females well, but placing it were the prevailing winds will carry the pollen toward the females would be best. No Actinidia produce nectar, but both male and female flowers produce pollen (the female pollen is non-viable) which provides protein as a reward for bees. As far as comparison with A. deliciosa, the hardy kiwi fruits are much smaller, sweeter and more flavorful, and have less acid. ~kiwinut

With few exceptions, most of what has been identified as C. douglasii is not genetically distinct from C. maculata. The introduced poison hemlock (Conium maculatum) also has purple spotted stems and more finely divided leaves. There is a plant called hemlock parsley (Conioselinum chinense) that grows in fens that is superficially similiar. The bulblet-bearing water hemlock (Cicuta bulbifera) is a much more delicate plant compared to the rest of these.

Siphium perfoliatum AKA cup plant has perfoliate leaves of that general shape and toothiness along with square stems, which this appears to have in your close-up.
