I thought at first you were having a similar issue to what I've been dealing with but your unhealthy plant looks like my 'healthier' plant. I have heard that they don't like much fertilizer so I'd agree with that assessment. I have also heard that low light does make the leaves yellow, but I could be wrong and Fab seems to disagree. I have two plants both from seed that are about 3.5 years old. They are both about a foot tall and grown indoors in 1:1 perlite:peat. They don't enough light, they don't get enough humidity, and up until recently I didn't know they were sensitive to chlorine so they used to just get tap water. Now I use tap water left out overnight with some vinegar to drop the pH. So far no fruiting, but they are just now getting around the appropriate size so I am hopeful. My problem is also pale leaves, however mine are usually bright yellow with dark green veins. I haven't had them grow this way lately, but old yellow leaves are still there and they occasionally put out new ones. Does this sound like chlorosis or is it a nutrient deficiency of some sort? Mine get the occasional extra dilute foliagepro. Fab, you indicated chlorosis would give the reverse to the coloration that I see. I also have a problem with new leaves drying/dropping off on occasion. They are stable once they mature but the new growth is not super robust. I just figured it was a humidity issue. Thank you, Kitty and Carol, for your encouragement. Nik, I appreciate your observations. Jo, that does look very much like what is happening to my rose. Thank you very much for taking the trouble to get pictures and post. Yes, I hardly pruned it this winter, and I do find that in the few instances where roses produce blind shoots it tends to happen on lightly pruned roses. Without any science to back me up it nevertheless seems to me that not all roses are capable of growing forever unchecked in our winterless climate. A few roses seem to achieve a certain size and just sit there until some pruning is done to encourage them to regrow. I don't know whether it depends on the type of rose, gardening practices or simply on the fact that there is not always room for roots to grow to the same size as the top. I want to add that on blind shoots I have noticed (very easy to spot on HTs) the leaves seemed to look normal to me. Perhaps I have not been looking very closely. I went to Home Depot yesterday and bought a set of cheap pruning tools. I will re-prune the rose, toss the tools just in case and let you know what happens. Or possibly a cracked cylinder head or leaking head gasket. If you have run this engine for a while with this coolant/lube oil mixture in the crankcase, you can expect bearing and crankshaft damage as well. It's time for a tear down and inspect. A visual check might find a cracked head but usually requires the valves to come out to see everywhere in the plenums. Most automotive machine shops can pressure test a head (head must be off the engine) for leaks. I'm NOT familiar with this exact engine but a defective HEAD GASKET can sometimes leak coolant into the lube oil (by a breach between a coolant passage and a push rod tunnel or oil return passage) before the head gasket fails completely. With that in mind the head, head gasket, and the block need to be closely inspected for evidence of a failed head gasket BEFORE cleaning away the gasket from the head or the block. Inspection should be by someone with good knowledge of what signs to look for. (not Bill England for sure) Same caution for inspecting the crank and bearings, the person needs to be able to recognize the signs. It might be possible to find some photo illustrations somewhere on the web or in a good engine manual as to what the evidence looks like.

I know I'm way late posting this, but I've gotta tell someone.... We were first in line. Proved who we were, signed the book. Moved down to the lady handing out ballots. There were three sets, one for city residents, one for something-I'm not sure what, and one for the county--that's me. Only thing was, there weren't any ballots for county residents. They looked and looked and couldnt find them. I suggested to the workers' boss he send someone to the nearest precint (just across the street) and borrow some. He "didn't know" where the nearest precinct was. I told him. Then he didn't have anyone to send. I said I'd go. Nope. Then the box you feed the ballot into jammed, and NO ONE could vote. People were backing up and milling around--it was a mess. I went home. Hubby stayed, and got home about 20 minutes later. The jammed box was un-jammed and they "found" the "missing" ballots in the box with the others where they were all along. I don't think it was anything sinister, but it sure was a nuisance.
