Comments (32)We used B&W tile! I think they are called American Tile now- these are the 27S Aqua Satin. The website has their catalog of sizes- they carry a lot of sizes and shapes! We used them them for our green bathroom and we are doing a pink and aqua bathroom this summer- they have just the right shades of pastel!...See More1950s kitchen reno reveal!
Comments (59)Steph, your house looks great, and I love what you did in the kitchen. Having done a whole house remodel twice, I know that the challenges of budgets and dealing with the unknowns that you may encounter factor in to your final choices. I can count many times that we had to revise our original vision to accommodate plumbing, HVAC, etc. Love that you went with classic choices in the kitchen and that you were able to keep the original tile in the bathroom while updating the overall look. I hope you and your family are comfortable in your home and enjoy it as long as you are there....See More1950’s Kitchen Bandaid
Comments (14)You'll be getting it ready to sell if you are only using it occasionally in the next year. Interview a couple very active real estate agents to get their advice about fixing up the house for sale. Markets are local. If they recommend doing the minimum, here's what I suggest. Have the sheet vinyl flooring stripped or cleaned professionally, then sealed with a couple coats of floor finish (Pledge makes one). Paint the walls in a warm off white that will go with the honey colored wood cabinets. Replace the light switches and GFCI outlets with white ones. Do any repairs that have been pending. Wash the diffuser on the fluorescent fixture and change the old graying tubes to new ones. If you want to have a dishwasher for your visits, you can buy a portable dishwasher (some can be converted to permanent installations later) you can put next to the stove....See More1950’s kitchen with wood cabinets need advice!
Comments (13)Since it sounds like redoing the entire kitchen is off the table, I think I would just choose a brighter hardware and lean into the look a little bit instead of doing things to "correct" it. A brighter solid color laminate counter would probably look better than the current one. Note that with a typical electric free-standing range such as yours the side clearances are typically 1"-0" to vertical combustible surfaces. And if you do not notice any evidence of scorching in the 40 or more years this range has been in place, it's probably not an issue. Check the specs on your new range. This can sometimes be compensated for by 1/4" millboard and a metal panel mounted to the cabinet as shown in these specs from a currently offered electric range as noted in the lower left hand corner. If you were going to redo the entire kitchen and spend upwards of $50,000, you would probably change a number of things about this kitchen, of course. Since it sounds like this is off the table, I would recommend making a few cosmetic changes to brighten it up a bit and work with it instead of against it. Don't try to make it look like it is 2023, that is not going to happen with a limited budget and that's fine. Don't let people try to shame you into a project you do not want to do or have the budget for just because it does not meet their needs of what a kitchen is supposed to be. There is nothing wrong with spending a couple thousand dollars on this kitchen instead of $50,000 if that's what you want to do. It's not an all or nothing proposition....See Morejemdandy
