Whiteflies were the 2nd easiest to deal with this year for me, and I have had almost everything. If you cannot use lady bugs then mix a solution of 50/50 isopropyl to room temp water. You will hear mixed reviews about this, and if you use it too much you can definitely harm your plants. I found it to be extremely effective, most so on whiteflies. Remember to look at the percent of your alcohol, try to make the solution 50%, not just 50% by volume. Get an adjustable spray bottle and spray the undersides of the leaves only with one good mist, this is where the eggs and 99% of the whiteflies reside so I dont bother spraying the tops. Be sure the plants are ventilated and spray no more than once every couple days. You can use traps in conjunction with spray and it is very effective, the ones that escape without dying instantly will often fly straight onto the traps.

Rhizo has made an important point above. White fly needs a host plant(s) to reproduce. Your job is to figure out what you are growing that is the major host plant. Do a search for "white fly + host plants" for some help in plant identification. Remove the problem plant and that should end your white fly problem. If you live in the south variegated privet is a major host plant. California has many types of host plants as you will note by searching that state. To date my yard had been free of white fly until early this summer when I discovered the gardenias covered with white fly. I did a search to see which of the newly introduced plants might be the host culprit. Found it right away...arugala. Ripped them out, bagged them tightly and tossed into the garbage. End of whitefly problem. I have, over the years, tried many methods to control white fly. The only successful one has been to fill my hose end sprayer container with lemon detergent which contains no additives such as degreasers and antiseptics. Setting the dial at one tablespoon per gallon I spray the affected plants early every morning and this controls them for a 24 hour period. Nothing else has worked for me.

Looks like environmental damage to me. Were these transplanted or direct seeded? Rodney

Sounds like fungus gnats, usually a result of overly wet soil. The larvae live in the soil and nibble on roots. They can be a chronic problem indoors, especially if the growing media is kept too wet. The control for them is Bt - same as for mosquitoes - an organic bacteria that kills them. You can just buy a package of Mosquito Dunks, dissolve one in a couple gallons of water and use that to water the plants to kill them. Dave
