Help - seeking some input of pots n' pans drawers size!

I realize there is already a bit of discussion about the drawer widths for such but I have a stretch of cabinets on one wall and I can either do 36" stack of drawers for pots n pans with a corresponding 15" stack of drawers for small appliances - or a 33" drawer stack for pots n pans with an 18" set for small appliances. Both will have a 5-6" drawer on top, 8" middle drawer and a 13" bottom drawer (unless there are better ideas?) What I am really wondering is - what's the best use for the 3" difference? better for the pots stack or the small bits stack? going custom so have flexibility. Input welcome - please and thanks!

I have an 18" stack, and it's not all that big. I definitely wouldn't

go 15".

What you need to do is lay out the items you want to go in each drawer, and measure. Remember that the drawer and hardware take up space, so a 33" stack does not give you 33? usable space. Your cabinet maker can tell you how much to allow for sides and glides.

Try arranging your current pots and pans on a counter top or table and see how wide of a drawer you need depending on the sizes of your cookware.

I've got a 36" pot and pan drawer unit and for my particular pots and pans I could have definitely gone up to 6" narrower. That's with a double set of pots and extra pans I inherited from my mom when she moved. But I should mention I'm really type A in the way I get everything to fit in there. So if you like to just toss things in, maybe you'd like the extra room and not have to be very particular about stacking things precisely.

As for the other cabinet, see what you've got right now in your kitchen and see how you would like (or not like) a door that corresponds to the 15" or 18" cabinet. I've got an 18" base cabinet on the other side of my stove (which buts up to a blind base with another 18" door) and I find that even with the 18" I'm forced to take half the cabinet stuff out in order to reach anything beyond the front 6". I couldn't imagine having something 3" narrower.

Now if you're going to make the 15"/18" cabinet a drawer cabinet, don't forget that the usable width will be less than a door cabinet because of the drawer sides. I used to have a 15" wide 4 drawer cabinet (all equal height) that I used for my cooking utensils next to the stove. It was nice to have 4 drawers because it allowed me to organize things by type a little more than 3 drawers would. But at the same time I found it wasn't enough room to store everything because it was so narrow. And I had a hard time finding organizing units to fit inside the drawers because they were just slightly too narrow for most.

I've got an 18" base cabinet with 2 roll out drawers inside. Originally I wanted to store my Rubbermaid type containers (actually Lock & Lock) in there but it wouldn't work because it was juuuust too narrow to fit more than one stacked set side by side.

I'd suggest doing the same thing with your appliances as with your pots and pans - lay them out on a counter and play around with how much room you would have and how you would store them. Would you have enough room to fit more than one item in each drawer? Will the drawers be tall enough? Etc. Take into account the actual size of usable space and not just the outer box dimensions. If there are items you don't own yet but think you'll own in the future, you can usually find dimensions online.

Why do you want the sink and DW in the island? It eats up valuable workspace and puts dirty dishes in the face of anyone sitting at the island. Is it b/c you want to face people while working? Well then look at these statistics works studies have found: 70% of the work done and time spent in the kitchen is spent prepping 20% is spent cleaning up 10% is spent cooking If you want to visit people while working, then it makes the most sense to have your Prep Zone in the island. Add a prep sink in the island and it now becomes a big expanse of workspace for large projects like baking, cake making, homework, school/science fair, gift wrapping, crafts, etc. The above also explains why it's best to have an island all one level...to maximize workspace. If your island is big enough, you can fit two levels, but you should have an island big enough to make both levels a decent size. Is the desk necessary? Most people remodeling are taking desks out of their kitchens b/c they've found they're really nothing more than clutter magnets! With laptop computers becoming more the norm than the exception these days, it can be used just about anywhere...on the island, at a table, etc. You could create a Message/Command Center where the desk is, but don't make it too big and don't put a chair space there. Make it base cabinet (drawers or drawer + ROTS) with an upper cabinet and you can corral the clutter somewhat. Put the family calendar, landline phone/answering machine, charging station, keys, mail organizer, note board, pens/pencils, note pads, etc. in that area. Or, make it a tall cabinet and create an "Organization Closet" that has doors that open out and in and that can be closed to hide the clutter when you have company(Sweeby, the creator of the "Sweeby Test", has one.) Regardless of the option you go with (desk, Message/Command Center, Organization Closet), I'd make it somewhere b/w 24" and 36" wide. Any more and I think you're wasting space that could be used in the kitchen, especially with that pantry taking up so much room. (I'm not saying get rid of it, as a matter of fact I have a corner pantry that I really like, but mine is not in the middle of the kitchen separating key appliances and possibly Zones...let's try to make the pantry work!) Wood floors - We put in natural Sassafras floors where the new kitchen is going - no stain - stain will DEFINITELY need touching up sooner than later in a kitchen. Sassafras is a light-colored wood with interesting grain, but it is soft (just barely harder than pine). Natural Maple is light-colored - very little grain though, so it is a more modern, clean look. Ambrosia Maple has character - worm holes and darker streaking. Where the new floor meets the antique Fir floor in the DR we will be adding a decorative strip between (probably Walnut and Ash). We hand-finished all our floors with Tung Oil; the benefit is that any wear-and-tear can easily be touched up with a bit of steel wool and new oil on just that area, rather than needing to re-do the entire floor. Search this forum for Tung Oil - there is one thread where I posted all the details on how to properly do it (April or March 2011). River rock tiles - the average price for those is about $10-$12 / sq.ft. Your link is in Polish Zloty, but I don't know the current exchange rate. I'm not Jewish, so I don't know the rules, but I agree that a small oven sucks! We have a 37" wide vintage Chamers Range, and the oven is SMALL! If I cannot get a separate baking center (where the laundry is supposed to go), we'll be putting one extra 30" electric wall oven under the counter in the island. Not so convenient, but a necessary evil - we NEED the counterspace, so wall ovens are out in our small kitchen. My kitchen is an "L" with an island - open fully on two sides to DR and FR; the cab walls are only 12' and 13'6" long. I am still able to fit a separate 33" fridge and 33" freezer, an extra 27" 3-burner electric cooktop with storage below, the 37"w Chambers range, one smaller 21-24"w sink with double dish-drawers next to the range, and a large 36"w sink for pots and pans and prep (next to compost drawer) on the island. Both sinks will be at least 9" deep, the smaller one maybe 12" deep because that will be the dish sink. Do you need 2 separate dishwashers? What about a double dish-drawer unit? They take up less aisle space when open, and for us the benefit is that smaller loads can be done more often, rather than waiting to fill up a standard D/W and running out of coffee mugs and spoons in the meantime ;)

I like Holligator's plan...I really like corner pantries (I put one in our kitchen as well!). But, I would definitely move the ovens to the other side. To me, the west side seems crowded. It does make an excellent work area, but a little close--especially if you have someone cleaning up while you're prepping/cooking. If the ovens are moved then the cooktop could move south a foot or two to add some workspace/distance b/w the sink/DW and cooktop. The refrigerator side will still have plenty of landing space. I would still put a prep sink in the island, though, to increase the functional work area to include working on both sides of the island if needed or even on the refrigerator/oven side. One advantage of the island remaining is that it will help direct traffic away from the cooking side. W/the corner pantry & no island, people would probably cut diagonally across the kitchen and possibly infringe on the cooking zone--which could be a safety issue (in addition to an annoyance!). The combination of the end of peninsula opening and island will direct traffic to the east side of the kitchen b/w the DR and Breakfast area. I really like the shape of that peninsula!

Our silverware (really flatwear as it is stainless steel, not silver) drawers are 3.2" usable height and that works fine for the flatwear, knives and some utensils. We have 3.6" usable height in our utensil drawers and that fits the rest of the stuff like potato mashers and dry measure cups. The drawer front height for both is 5.25". That's also the height for our wraps (plastic wrap, foil, etc) drawer. We wanted to maximize our drawer space because we keep kosher and so we have different sets of stuff for milk and for meat plus some for parve (neither milk nor meat) food. By the way, also remember that you lose about 2" of width in frameless cabinets and more in framed cabinets which depends on the width of the frame. It means that the useable inside of a drawer in a 15" wide cabinet will be 13" or less. I find that kind of narrow and preferred to keep our narrowest drawers 21" or wider. We used our narrower spaces for tray cabinets for cutting boards, baking sheets, wire racks, etc and one next to the cooktop for pullout shelves with oils, vinegars and other bottled stuff.

We went with deeper drawers than normal for our island, 23 vs 20 with a 27 vs 24 inch base cabinet.

What small appliances??

I doubt that I would go smaller than 36" for my pots n pans. Don't think I would give up the space for small appliances.

My drawers are 35-1/2". The only drawer stack that isn't 35-1/2" wide is 18" and I think 15" would be much less useful (I had a 12" drawer in my previous home that was useless)

If you are planning to store pots or lids on their sides, be sure that the internal height of your bottom drawer fits your largest pan or lid that you plan to store there. The internal height can be quite different from the drawer front height.

all but my largest pots and lids are in the equivalent of middle and lower drawers of a 30 inch wide cabinet. I had to pare down pots since I switched to induction but now use almost everything I have and don't miss anything. The largest pots are in the lazy susan cabinet next door.

I've had both 33" and 36" pot drawers that worked well for me. Different pots and pans though, so it's true that you really do need to look at what you have and how you will store it. My mother had a 15" cabinet beside her stove (with pullouts) that worked really well for her saucepans. I'm suddenly rethinking my pot drawers. :)

I realize this is an old thread, but hope that someone will respond. Our kitchen designer had designed our 48" island with 2 banks of drawers: 30" and 18". Cabinets were just delivered and for some reason they were changed to: 33" and 15". Should we have them redone? Most posters say 15" is not great, but may be manageable. Will the extra 3" in the larger bank be useful?
