Identifying clematis

Hi guys,

I moved to a new home in late fall and have a climbing vine on my fence. The neighbours tell me it's clematis but don't know what kind. It didn't have many leave and no flowers when we arrived. I have been here almost 4 years now and Without know what kind it is - it had never bloomed. I did my best to bring it back. This year the leaves look great, it had filled out and finally has buds. Though when looking online I can't seem to find anything that looks similar. Can anyone tell me what this Clematis might be?

I think that may be a honeysuckle.

Marcia is right - it is a honeysuckle/Lonicera. If you post when it blooms you may get more of an ID. You could post on the Name that Plant forum which has some real plant experts.

I doubt it's either 'Etoile Violette' or 'Polish Spirit' - both of these are late season clematis (pruning group 3) that usually don't start blooming until midsummer. In full bloom in April would be pretty unusual. It could very well be 'Jackmanii' or 'Jackmanii Superba'. While this is also a group 3 clem, it has one of the longest bloom cycles and can start blooming quite early - late spring as opposed to midsummer.

Since it appears to be a hybrid of the two that it is near, it is unnamed and you can call it whatever you like. Even two crosses of the same two plants aren't identical - they can be similar or quite different depending on which genes they got from which parent (just like kids) so yours doesn't have a formal identity.

Honeysuckle is often popular with hummingbirds. Yours is looking healthy.

You can always add a clematis.
