Custom built range hood or stainless hood?
Comments (3)Have you considered doing a different hood (neither stainless nor matching the cabinets) to make it a focal point? In a small galley I'd go with the least obtrusive (match the cabinets, or stainless undercabinet). In a large open kitchen (i.e., in a great room or simliar) I'd go with the same thing. But in a large, squarer (vs. galley) kitchen, I'd use the hood to introduce a punch of color, even if it's a neutral like black (perhaps with stainless banding). Re cleaning the wood, it depends on how good your insert is and how ornate the wood is. Lots of appliques with high relief grapes and vines, for instance, combined with a lot of billowy, greasy cooking (tossing wet food into hot oil for instance), so that the vapors escape the hood catchment, could be a real nightmare. A simple design, wtih less aggressive cooking, should be fine. As with all other cleaning, it helps if you attend to it early and often, rather than waiting until you can see the crud....See MoreRed Range with Stainless Hood?
Comments (36)Looking at all the pics, I'm not sure I'd like that chimney style hood as well in color. Everyone has made a great point about replacing one vs replacing both, and I also think Sayde's point about the amount of red on the range is something to consider...You don't want the hood to steal the attention or have more visual weight than the range. One other thing, if there is a chance you'll ever move, you might want to take your fantastic red range with you and put a stainless one in for selling...?...See MorePossible to add straps & rivets to store bought stainless steel hood?
Comments (22)I really like that zinc hood. Very well done. And very interesting to see how the home owner carefully picked a design that looks good but is easier to manufacture than some of the commercially made hoods. Knowing what can and cannot be done easily is absolutely one of the skills that a good craftsman needs to have. And even after simplifying the design, I bet he used a couple of specialized big machines. I can just about picture how you could build this hood with hand tools. But it would take a lot of experience to make it look this nice. Even with access to modern tools, there is plenty of potential to mess it up....See MoreUsing a black stainless range hood with stainless steel appliances
Comments (14)Thank you for all your opinions. @Patricia. As it turns out, we are doing a Bosch dishwasher and a samsung microwave, but the refrigerator, range and hood are GE Profile. After much scouring of the internet I actually found the exact application I was looking to do with the GE range I'm looking at with a hood from a different brand. What do those of you with the trained design eye think?...See Moreainelane
