Living room help! How can I brighten up this space??
Comments (2)It's a nice room and you've done a pretty good job. A few tweaks though,,,,exchange the short plant for a taller plant, in that corner. If you can't do a taller one, then hang the one you have from the ceiling or put it on a taller, mini table. put the plant on something like this. Target..Project 62 That sectional, (which really is too big for this room) in front of that door, really closes off the room (visually and literally). if you could, at some point, you could use separate pieces, that would be great. going w/a round, open style coffee table will soften some of those square edgesTarget. a single sofa against the long wall, some colored pillows, artwork, the coffee table/bench (using one like this that's 'open' looking, gives the illusion of more space) the blue velvet chair for some accent colors,,,,this is what you need in your space. for instance, imagine if you removed that smaller end of the sofa and had something like this against that wall or this one. BTW, these colors, below, would look great in your room. Do you have any artwork? Framed pictures, tapestry, shelving,,,anything? here is a simple example that you could do. Target has cute accessories like little tables, pillows, wall decor, etc, that you could use. bring in some color w/the arrangement like they done here, for behind your sofa. the pics behind this sofa are hung a bit high, but should give you an idea of how to accessorize your room. this would also be a better table for you. It's mainly that sectional that is really making this room heavy. if you need window coverings, I keep it sleek w/some inset blinds of some sort....See MoreNeed help brighten up my living room!
Comments (30)Like all that natural light from the windows. Like the chairs flanking the fireplace. Instead of making a lot of drastic changes all at once, begin with adding white miniblinds inside the frame of each window, leaving your curtains/drapes off for a while. Even if you rehang your sheers, put the red drape away for a time. I like plants, too. You might consider keeping the smaller of the two larger plants, setting it in your corner, and either selling the larger one or giving it away -- perhaps to a family member or friend or even donating one to a local nursing home for their community room. If either ivy like plant is real, it may need to be repotted as both containers seem full. If it isn't real, wrap in a plastic bag and store them away, at least for a while. Keep your options open. If you get rid of both of the palms, consider snake plants as a replacement. My tallest one is 4' tall over the dirt in the pot but it doesn't spread as wide as the plants you have. It does usually have new plants come up in the pot beside the original. Next change, remove the dark platter and candle holders from the armoire. Alternately, remove the platter and change the candles in the candle holders to white -- then you could always change them as the season changes leaving white most of the time but using other colors, too: orange for October; red for December and February; green for March, etc.. Then change the lamp shades to white ones. Choose those that are smooth and plain and that have straighter sides (about the size as the bottom width of the ones you now have). If you're going to paint, consider choosing a creamy off white or a neutral tan that is a light brown w/o any pink or yellow hue. Would not want carpet or a rug with a fireplace if it burns wood. You could lighten/brighten the fireplace by changing the fireplace screen. Live with each change you decide to make, at least briefly, to see if YOU and your family like it better....See MoreBrighten up Living Room
Comments (17)We used to have a rug in the living room but we have three dogs and there was one where she would like to take her afternoon break on it somehow. We removed it and then she stopped her afternoon pee breaks. Perhaps i can try it again and see if she will do it again. and since I have three dogs, the other dogs follow suit.. :( I don't have a dining room; only a eat in with the kitchen. I do however, have a small area in the kitchen for a changing table. and we are planning on using cloth diaper so it'll be interesting lol. Unfortunately, I don't think I have option to create a pass through wall. The only wall I was thinking of being able to knocking down or creating an opening is the one that leads into the kitchen but there's an air vent at the bottom and light switch on the other side of the wall :( Preferably I'd like to keep the bench as it has four big deep draws. I can probably put baby stuff in there without having them lie in open areas of the house. My original thought was using the corner space with the window for the baby area as it does have some light. I bought Ikea frames kind of matching to the bench and was going to hang two above and I also have a 2x4 foam core picture that I'd like to hang but if it doesn't match then I probably shouldn't use it...(see picture below) I was also looking at Montessori Toy Storage based on other Houzz member suggestions and placing foam mattress for the baby. The wall paint in the Foyer and living room is Benjamin Moore Cloud White. The paint in the kitchen is Benjamin Moore Lemon Sorbet. I don't think we will be repainting the walls. I'm hoping to keep the budget within a minimum of course now that we have a baby coming :). Sofa is really the big furniture I was thinking of replacing and may be the hanging lights. Wall that I was thinking of putting an opening through but there's a vent at the very bottom behind the recliner and there's light switch on the other side of the wall in the kitchen. I was thinking I can put the changing station in this area with a change pad over the existing ikea cart. the hanging light with reflection The bench area where I bought the Ikea frames to hang around. The hanging light with reflection in the ceiling May be I can reuse this wall tapestry for the sofa but not sure if it's too light and need a darker version....See MoreBrighten this west facing Living Room!
Comments (1)So all of what you are talking about doing will help. Recessed lighting with dimmers would be the first recommendation. If you can’t do them, then get a large diameter, low profile drum shade light with a diffuser so you don’t have exposed bulbs. Wall washer light(s) on the fireplace and possibly the tv wall unit again if you can go into the ceiling. If you can’t do that, then add some under mount lights to the wall unit shelves. Amazon has some nice ones with a remote that are battery operated. Wall sconces on the wall between kitchen and family room or over the fireplace. I’d rather see a nice art piece over the fireplace which you can light up with a battery operated light from Amazon. A light background area rug with some green in it. Light throw pillows since the sectional is going dark. Use taller table lamps which will provide more light. I’d ditch the drapes and valances. Maybe just side panels with a light background and some green. I’d also put a graphic wall covering in the alcove. For paint, I’d go with a white with a green or gray undertone. Here’s a not so great mock-up lol....See Morewritersblock (9b/10a)
