Freezing Sun Room
Comments (11)Tanie 51, I experience similar problems in my older home. Even though we have all double pane windows we still get condensation but no freezing yet. When the outside temp is below 32F or 0C this occures on the lower part of the windows. We solved the problem by using a 3rd layer if insulation on the inside of the window frame. There are lots of brands of these clear plastic products at all of the home repair centers. You apply double sided tape to the frame then apply the plastic then smooth out any wrinkles by applying heat from a blow dryer. These are clear, crystal clear. You can't tell that they are on the window. You can see the difference though. I would imagine you will see some heating savings as well. I've seen another product that is bubble wrap that goes on the inside of the window. You lose clear vision with this product though. That product is reusable where the film is a one time use product that you take off in the springtime. I bought a bulk box that will do 10 3'x5' windows for $11.95 US. That was enough to do all of my windows. The only complaint I have was I had to wash all of my windows first....See MoreSunroom by BetterLiving company?
Comments (3)Len, Here in the Northeast, Four Seasons brand is quite popular and very expensive, but most important they are well established and there when you need them. I took a look at Betterliving's site and read abit of the technical data and it seams to be a well thought product. You also mention the contractor is well established as well. Thats a plus. My only concern would be the type of glass cartridges they come with. These rooms can get as hot as an oven without the proper glass and ventilaton. I'd look into glass choices, low E with argon gas? Perhaps a reflective glass coating? Not sure. Depends on the room's exposer and your climate. Comments (2)I'm not good at visualization, but will offer advice nonetheless! 1) What bothers me about the second layout is that if you want to open up the table to seat more, it seems like you would have to change the orientation of the table back to the first layout - maybe that's not the case. Also, I'm not sure there's enough space for moving the chair (the one that would be against the window) in the second layout - although it is hard to tell about space without the table in place and without a better picture of the width of the walking space. So, I guess I would vote for layout 1 2) I think the chair is fine with and without cover. I guess I would vote for without cover just to keep the space light, unless black fits in with your decorating scheme. If you are thinking of sewing your own covers, something tying in with the kitchen would be great. Maybe a color in the cabinets or backsplash. 3) My preference for a rug is to go large (though it is a shame to cover that beautiful floor). I like all of my chair legs on the rug, even when I pull out the chair to have a seat. However, I wouldn't invest in a new rug, until you have your new dining set. Also, I would consider going rugless and putting some padding on the end of the chair and table legs in order to protect the floor....See MoreLI New York sunroom versus basement for citrus plants
Comments (9)Steve, your setup looks interesting. So the consensus is sunroom but I will order a bigger heater and get rid of the 2 small 1500w ones currently there. My room has 3 walls of single pane glass floor to ceiling and winter night temps will soon be well below freezing. Subtropix, 40's nighttime not devastating your plants is great to hear, do you even bother with humidity level? I have one Julie mango that I brought in my living room and did not do well but back in the sunroom it looks well again. How long have you had that mango and how has it handled your night winter temps?...See Morelaceyvail 6A, WV
