Succulent Plants of the World by Fred Dortort

Just a quick book review: I checked out The Timber Press Guide to Succulent Plants of the World, by Fred Dortort, and really enjoyed it.

It starts out with a bit of an introduction to succulents in general, and quickly dives into specific families and genera. There's lots of text describing growing habits and the native habitats of species, along with pictures of many of them. (The book's subtitle is "A Comprehensive Reference to More than 2000 Species," and I believe it!) Unlike some other books I've checked out, it's not just a picture book.

As someone who's relatively new to succulents, I appreciated the extremely broad overview of the world of succulents, along with respectable depth. My "to grow" list expanded quite a bit, now including species from entire genera I had never heard of.

My one wish is that it included cacti, but as he explains, that would just be too much to try to pack into a single book.

Overall, very much worth the hours I spent going through it.
