What part don't you agree with, HDD? You do seem to agree that Yellow Devil is a grex and not a species. Here's my two cents worth: Yellow Devil is the grex name for all offspring from the Elmore cross of N. cruenta 'Sun King' x kautskyi. 'Lucky Strike' is one of the cvs. from that grex, and is the one that has the red streaks, so in my opinion Kerry's plant, Lyndi's second one and Golinski's photo should all properly be named N. Yellow Devil 'Lucky Strike', or simply Lucky Strike. Calling it Yellow Devil is not wrong, it's just incomplete, since there are other cvs. from that grex (Gold Dust, Bonanza, Eureka, Yukon & Golden Nugget). The prectice of giving grex names has been phased out now, but it was the norm when Elmore was making his hybrids. Nowadays the cv. name is all that matters. Calling the red-streaked cv. "Sun King", on the other hand, is wrong, since that is only one of its parents. If anyone has copies of the old Grande magazine, they can verify this. Grande was published by Elmore (during the 70s?) and had only a few issues, now collector's items. One of the articles was about N. cruenta 'Sun King' and its hybrids, and the photo of it shows a plain green form of N. cruenta with prominent red leaf tips (no red streaks), surrounded by some of the hybrids. Unfortunately I don't have the magazines, just a badly discolored photocopy of that picture that I made some 20 years ago, otherwise I'd post it, but find the magazine and see for yourself! ;-)

I've got some ASK for a very shaded area. From what I read online I thought that in the shade in my short growing season it would probably top out at 4' tall and wide, but NHBabs pointed me to this thread because of Thyme2dig's enormous specimen. I skimmed, so maybe I missed it, but how much sun does T2D's get? Larger than 4' would be great for my location, but it will determine if I put one or two there. If 7' wide is the norm in deep shade then I should only plant one. Also, I am at minimum 2 weeks behind everybody else, and possibly more. On the coast or Maine our summers come late. I know it's a fast grower, but our season is shorter.

when they come from a reputable breeder... dyhgarden, this is so very true. I would never purchase an animal from a puppy mill (and believe me, there are a lot in personal homes of "reputable" people - I know one and she makes me sick the way she breeds her little dogs constantly - they are cash flow for her, but everyone thinks she is sooooo nice). I did a lot of research and found a very good breeder who bred her dogs only once every two years and was very selective of the bloodlines of the papa dogs to assure there was no interbreeding. She shows her poodles, has won many awards for toy poodles, and sells only a few; mine was trained to be a show dog, but she didn't make it because she was too much of a dancer and whirler. So I got to purchase her when she was one year old to my great luck. She is an absolute delight. Even people who don't care for dogs warm up to Gracie very quickly. She weighs 6 pounds and, because of that, everyone always views her as a wonderful, cuddly puppy, even when they know she is way past being a puppy. I always have a problem posting pictures on Houzz and have been trying to post a picture of Gracie, but have not been successful.

I had to move mine to more sun. In dense shade it lost the gold color, turned more plain green and was very slow to grow. Once I moved it to a sunnier spot the growth exploded, it keeps its color and blooms. The clumps get bigger, send up more stems as the mature. The larger ones are 4'x4'. I think a location where they get 3 to 4 hours of good sunlight is better than all shade.
