You know, when I first saw the cantilevered, I thought how cool and would have been willing to go that route, but our neighbor has one and now, I'm not so sure. Looking across the landscape at their deck, the umbrella looks too massive. Their deck is a good size and still the base seems to eat up a lot of the floor space whereas with a market umbrella that's not an issue. We have two sitting areas in our yard, one on the grass and one on the deck, umbrellas for both. I like how light and easy the market umbrellas are to move around and take care of.

I'm ambivalent about the cantilevered, for the size of the footprint, and I don't like how they look closed. They just look droopy and sad.

I think it depends on the furniture set up and how you use the space.

We have market style on our patio at the lake but have a cantilevered one on our deck at home. That deck gets loads of sun and the size and ease of moving it for shade works best there. It covers the whole glider if I'm reading there in the afternoon but pivots easily over the bar table where we sometimes eat early evening meals.

Like Amck2, we have a cantilevered one and it works great for us. Our deck is on the south side of the house so we can swing the umbrella to keep us in the shade as the sun sets. It's also nice to not have the umbrella interrupting the table top when we have meals out there.

Amck2 and RNmom, did you bolt the base of the cantilevered umbrella to your deck? I am wondering about stability, especially in wind.

MIL bought us the one you see in the photo. It is not a crank, so it is a challenge to hoist it up. I have to stand on a stepstool to do it. Would much prefer regular crank or canitilever.

I definitely need and want a crank. Love the vegetable beds!

I tried replying earlier but my computer was being finicky. Our setup is very similar to Amck2. We have two blocks on it and two legs under the railing. No problems yet and we have had it several years.

We live in an area without a lot of wind/breeze, so we can keep the umbrella up. But like the other day with storms approaching, we will put it down. If there is heavy rain expected, we will put it down. It's a lot easier to take down than put up. Its on a pin, so I just have to pull the pin out and gently lower it.

mimi, some of those plants are now over 6' tall! The silvery fir tree with the ripening tomato is determinate so it doesn't get quite as tall, but DH had to buy an 8' stake for the sun sugar.

We had a cantilevered umbrella that I loved, but the wind caught it and whipped it up and broke it. We now have the crank umbrella in the middle of our patio table which is much more stable, and a lot harder to break.Yes, the cantilevered umbrella doesn't take up any table space, and you don't have to look around, but the crank umbrellas in the table are much more secure, and less likely to break!

Our son has a cantilevered umbrella on his pool patio...he only opens it

when they're using the pool. Other than that, he keeps it closed.
