What's wrong with my Blue Angel?

I bought this from Plant Delights about 10 years ago. After 4 or 5 years, it shrank. After doing research on this forum I decided I needed to water it which I had not done before. Now it is growing again, but it never looks right. It's never developed a mounding form that Blue Angels have.

The leaves are usually helter skelter as the above photo demonstrates.

Below are close ups of some of the leaves. It could be frost damage, but I'm also concerned about HVX. Once I'm certain it isn't HVX I'll dig it up and examine the roots.

In my experience, it might be that some dry rot has or is affecting the crown.

Basically the individual divisions are now competing with each other, instead of working in synergy together to produce the desired size/growth habit.

It may now be several small plants instead of one big one.

Dig it up and see.

Or insects. Phlox paniculata is a native plant, so sometimes insect damage shows up. Usually the insects move on and then you will see no new damage. Phlox should be planted about 18" apart; they need really good air circulation. That helps prevent diseases. Some nurseries suggest you remove all but 4 to 6 stems per plant ( I have not done this, but my plants are only in their 2nd year).

Many people think that girl leaves have ruffled edges, and that ruffling is what makes it a girl leaf. The defining trait of a girl leaf is a white or yellowish spot at the bottom of the leaf near the stem. The photo in the above post shows this spot very clearly. The photo of the original post does not. It is true that most girl leaves are ruffled, but again, the ruffling is not the defining trait of a girl leaf, it's the spot. What's wrong with my (I think) Echevaria Blue Cloud?

While it is difficult to tell from your picture because it is too dark and lacks detail, it may be Echeveria runyonii 'Topsy Turvy'. If you are growing it at the pictured location, it isn't getting near enough sunlight and has become etiolated and top heavy and therefor cascading over. It is normal for Echeveria to lose bottom leaves. I would cut the stem below the head leaving 3" ~ 4" of stem below the head to replant. Allow the cut head to callous for about a week in shaded area. Plant in a well draining mix. Don't water heavily but provide some minimal dampness and keep somewhat shaded until you see some new growth or the leaves perk up and become firm again. Once roots have been established, you can slowly acclimate to full sun. One way of determining if you have roots is to gently pull up on the stem. If you have roots, the soil will lift up. Blue angel is a selection of Salvia patens, which should definitely not be hardy in USDA Zone 6b. Are yoou in the arid southwestern states? That's the only way I can imagine they make it through the winter. They certainly won't make it through Zone 6b wet, subtropical southeastern US weather Also, they have tubers, and forest critters like pine voles will feast on them. Tuber and rhizome-bearing plants arise where there are no significant underground predators, such as in arid soils, with scree conditions (lots of crushed rock and drainage)

I don't see any visible signs of HVX on this plant. Just some leaf damage either from cold or being stepped on when they were "bullets"

I dug it up. No visible root damage, but it did seem to be growing as three individual plants. I divided. I planted. Thanks for the advice.

No problem, it happened to about 8 of my plants this winter due to the lack of snow.

Your misshapen leaves look just like frost/freeze damage I had here on my Elegans.

We had 3 inches of snow April 9th. There's lots of cold damage this year.

Were all of the misshapen leaves on one eye? If so, I would say pip damage when the pip was very tiny, like got stepped on, a bug took a bite out of it, something like that.

No, the damage was consistent throughout the entire plant.
