What's wrong with my Blue Angel?

I bought this from Plant Delights about 10 years ago. After 4 or 5 years, it shrank. After doing research on this forum I decided I needed to water it which I had not done before. Now it is growing again, but it never looks right. It's never developed a mounding form that Blue Angels have.

The leaves are usually helter skelter as the above photo demonstrates.

Below are close ups of some of the leaves. It could be frost damage, but I'm also concerned about HVX. Once I'm certain it isn't HVX I'll dig it up and examine the roots.

In my experience, it might be that some dry rot has or is affecting the crown.

Basically the individual divisions are now competing with each other, instead of working in synergy together to produce the desired size/growth habit.

It may now be several small plants instead of one big one.

Dig it up and see.

This summer a lot has been going on so it has been a really stressful time in my life, and because we have literally 100's of plants to care for, this area has been neglected. I don't believe the browning and dying out occurred until after the spikes bloomed. I normally would have deadheaded by now, but..... My second pix shows a plant that I didn't deadhead yet, but it has not gone immediately to the state the other one is in. The bad plant has probably now most of the stems brown with wilted brown leaves - look dead to me. Neither was deadheaded yet, but you can see the difference. If I cut out the dead stuff in the sick plant, there won't be much plant left. Thought maybe I should just cut out all the dead stuff and stake the rest to make it look as good as possible, but didn't know if closing it up like that would make the plant as a whole more susceptible to whatever ails it.

DeviGardener I grow all my brugmansias in big planters I use miracle potting mix that feeds upto 6 months it's the best solid I've used for my brugs and they thrive in it. some are as big as 8 ft tall or 9. I feed them every 2 weeks with miracle grow plant food. Looking at your pictures it seems that your brugs still need to grow but they usually very fast growers. Untill your plants grow they y's they will then start to flower. And when they start to flower and you feed them every 2 weeks you will have blooms most of the year. I live in california and this year my brugs have blooms almost all year long. You might consider taking them out and removing some solid from the rootball and add miracle grow potting mix that feeds upto 6 months and they should grow faster with that new dirt. And don't worry about hurting the plant brugs are very hardy I've done that tons of times removing a lot of the soil and adding new and they will rejuvenate. If you would like you can upgrade to bigger planters aswell. Well good luck on your brugs. Hope you have some blooms soon.

Hey, I know what southern blight is, lost my gorgeous The Razor's Edge to that stuff within a couple of days. On August 6 it looked great. On Aug 21, it looked like the picture below. It showed up quickly, looked like tiny orangy balls of Osmocote pelleted fertilizer making a mass all around the plant. Poor circulation of the air, high humidity, contribute to its presence. I tossed pot and all to get rid of the stuff. And, I moved my hosta into a better area of my garden. If your process was much longer, and showed no visible infestation of anything, then I don't think it was southern blight. Dig it up and look at the roots. If you think it's a goner anyway, might as well learn on a dead plant what did it. Might save the rest of the hosta nearby.

Do different varieties prefer different watering levels. I've been told not to water they like it dry and I've read that you need to water daily. I have a Ruby Glow Passiflora phoenicea that suddently took off with shoots when I started watering it every day instead of once a week. Also, why are they not blooming? Sorry for my ignorance and all the questions. I'm a newbie, obviously. My grandfather had Caerulea and I've been trying to renew the tradition.

I don't see any visible signs of HVX on this plant. Just some leaf damage either from cold or being stepped on when they were "bullets"

I dug it up. No visible root damage, but it did seem to be growing as three individual plants. I divided. I planted. Thanks for the advice.

No problem, it happened to about 8 of my plants this winter due to the lack of snow.

Your misshapen leaves look just like frost/freeze damage I had here on my Elegans.

We had 3 inches of snow April 9th. There's lots of cold damage this year.

Were all of the misshapen leaves on one eye? If so, I would say pip damage when the pip was very tiny, like got stepped on, a bug took a bite out of it, something like that.

No, the damage was consistent throughout the entire plant.
