Colloquial Names

I'm really following up on tlbean's "is this a magnolia tree?" post.

If you are like me and had any kin from Va/Tenn/NC mountains you heard a lot of words & expressions which might sound unfamiliar. To this day I'm not completely sure what sigogglin' means LOL. Here are a few plant names:

White Walnut = Juglans cinerea

Sassafrak = Sassafras albidum

Sarvice = Amelanchier spp.

Laurel = Rhod maximum

Red-stemmed ivy = Kalmia latifolia

Anyone remember pineresin? He/She was always correcting us yanks for using colloquial names that he didn't approve of. I don't think that there is any right or wrong with common name usage, if that is what the plants are known by in any locality, so be it. What do you think?
