Converting Formal dining room to gym

Hi,
We recently built a new house. On entering the house, there is formal dinning room on side and study on the other side. Study has glass doors. We don't want to use formal dining room space for dining as we have breakfast nook space.
I am thinking of converting formal dining room to gym. But I am concerned on the appearance, as the room is just at the entry. Would it be weird to see a treadmill just entering the house? Any ideas?

This is YOUR house. You are making the mortgage payments on it. If you want a gym right at your front door, go for it! It will tell anyone walking into your place that you believe in function over form, that working out is a priority with you and that you are not a slave to convention. If your friends object to seeing your Nordictrack the moment they walk in to your house, seek better friends. The reason I am on the website tonight is that I am trying to see ideas for changing my dining room into a home gym. I don't feed people except in the kitchen. I don't need a dining room. I'm fat. I need a gym. Consider it patriotism. You are FREE to do whatever the heckies you want in your own home.

That will be a very large play space. Have you thought about what kinds of functions you'd like in the room? Will you want a table area for board games and crafting? TV/video area? Open floor space area? What are the game/toy storage needs? Any book storage? How much sitting area...adult size? child size? Will you want a reading corner with a nice reading light and comfy chair? Thinking about these functions will help you figure out how to divide up the space. As it seems to be open to the front door, are there any foyer type storage needs such as a place to put shoes, boots, jackets, back packs, etc. Also, the dark curtains would make the room dark vs. venetian style blinds which would provide the light control and privacy yet allow air to circulate. You might consider them.

Thanks for the replies so far! Just to clear things up - The "Den" is also going to be an office - we need two. The idea of making the dining room into an office is about function over form, and actually using the space instead of wasting it. We've had guests over 0 times in the last 15 years. We've owned 6 homes in those years (including the one we are in now) with formal dining rooms and not used the dining table once. There is just us two - Our family lives 3000 miles away - and we are busy professionals - in retirement we will be at our country club for food/entertaining.. As is - we eat in the family room 99% of the time and only use our nook table for holidays... The large counter in this build would replace functionality of the nook table. The patio/pool area will have an extension with a fully screened in cage, and be a gathering space with tables/chairs - though where we live, it's miserable to be outside 8 months out of the year - so it's never used. That's our life - it's not even close to the same for everyone - which is why we wanted to make the conversion temporary - so it can be converted back for resale.

Design girl, I agree with you (although the eye definitely doesn’t see all the details the same way with it all being white). However, figured I’d try. A lot less expensive than buying a new one and if it doesn’t end up working I think it will Craigslist a whole lot faster. For a couple of bucks it was worth a try.

Maybe you could shield it with a screen or something but ... sorry, gotta ask, why did you build a house with a formal dining room if you don't want a formal dining room?

well, we had few options that the builder provided and given our budget and options we choose to go with this option. We thought we could use the room as play area for kids or gym or just sitting area. Rite now we are inclining to convert it to gym..

Yes it would be weird to have a gym at the entry of your home. Use that room as a study then and put your gym in the study.

It would be totally weird to have gym equipment that close to the entry of your house! I agree with luvourhome--put the gym equipment in the study and use the dining room for the study. It will look so much better!

you want a room with doors for your gym if its on your main living level. the air is pretty darn funky once you finish up. into the study it goes. consult an electrician regarding an exhaust fan.

We just transformed our formal dining that’s near the entry into a gym. We had it in the study but we bought more equipment during covid. I figured it would be best to use the larger space since we don’t eat in there. i plan to sell my dining room furniture and covert the study into my sitting/craft room. My thought is that we live in our house. Its not a museum.
