Where is the dining space that you'll be using most often? If its to the "east", maybe you want the cleanup sink and dishwasher on the blank perimeter. The island sink can be slightly smaller, no dishwasher. Trash should be in your prep area.

Others will want to see your whole house floor plan, even if just a sketch, to advise on the best kitchen layout.

GWers: the OP posted her island question on Houzz but posted here after I suggested she find a way to better utilize the perimeter counter with no appliances.

Also- square off that angled base cabinet. Make sure you get a Super Susan. The corners are tough enough to get to without making them deeper with the angled base. Plus with the angle you cant see your stuff when you spin the shelf. And the angle cramps everythibg next to it.

I like the straight island. As for the layout--I agree with emilyam that the DW and clean-up sink would be better on the pony wall. Then make the island shorter (width-wise), and add that space onto the 34" aisle. I'd put a prep sink on the corner of the island, where you have the 18" cabinet. If you don't want two sinks, then the angled cabinet will provide a wider prep space between the sink on the pony wall, and the range.

Personally, I like a gracefully curved island top in a transitional kitchen. I think it's a nice relief in an otherwise very rectangular architecture. You might go for a slightly more gentle curve, like this:

Hmmm. Since I know nothing about how you live, I wanted to move your 'living room' to the area labeled family room and have your family/ kitchen in the space adjacent to the screen porch.

Buehl's layout is great, including the pantry in the desk space as originally shown on the floor plan.

I didn't realize that was an open wall into the dining room at first. Is this a new build or a remodel?

Do you use both living spaces? If not, I would put a desk in one and create a space for the kids to play. How will you see them from the proposed kitchen desk?

A 15" overhang will be more comfortable, and you have the space for it.

Did you decide against the prep sink?

Make sure it's a Super Susan in the corner. No pole in the center.

I understand about the pot drawers. A prep sink would be nice in your layout and I don't think the faucet would be in the way if you do a 15" overhang. Without the sink, you'll be going from fridge to island to sink to stove back to sink for cleanup, so a bit of backtracking across work zones, but that should be ok in a small kitchen.

If you don't put a prep sink on the island, I'd recommend putting the trash pull-out in the 12" cabinet beside the range. Then put an 18" drawer base on the island. Again, I agree with emilyam, buehl, and the NKBA--the overhangs on the island need to be at least 15". Also, a deeper overhang will provide space between the prep sink faucet and a plate. NKBA guidelines -- #9

I would go back to exactly what beuhl gave you as what she gave you is more efficient. Notice your latest plans still do not give you wide enough aisles.

Your aisle between island and stove wall she has as 40". However that is not accurate since she has it 40" from cabinet to cabinet. Assuming a 1 1/2" countertop over hang on both sides, you're now down to a 37" aisle and that doesn't include the stove handles sticking out even further. The NKBA recommends a minimum of 42" (from counter to counter, not cabinet to cabinet) for a one person kitchen. So right there you've lost 5" of work space for one person. If two or more of you cook in the space you won't have any room.

Your space between sink and island is even worse. After taking into account the countertops you're down to a 36" aisle.

If you want the most efficient kitchen then you need the prep sink on the island.

Below are both beuhl's plan and yours. Red indicates how we start. We take food out of the fridge and bring it to the sink to wash.

From the sink we move it to our prep space to cut, dice, etc. That's indicated in green.

Finally we move the food over to the stovetop to cook it. That's indicated in blue.

Notice in beuhl's plan there is no crossing zones but in the plan without the prep sink, you're crossing the too narrow aisle to go from fridge to sink.

You don't need 59 1/2" behind the seating, but you do need more space in your aisles.

I think the 40" aisle between the stove and island is still too narrow since that is cabinet to cabinet. That width does not reflect the depth of the refrigerator. If the refrigerator sticks out 6" beyond the cabinets (and many do even if they are advertised as "counter depth") then the aisle is down to 34" at a major traffic point into the kitchen. You'll want a french door fridge for sure.

You have 59" between the island and the sliders. I'd shift the island about 6" towards the sliders and make the overhang closer to 15". This will also help open up the workspace between the sink and range.

To me that's a cute bar sink at best. I'm not sure you would use it to wash and peel vegetables and you certainly wouldn't be able to stack up some dirty dishes inside it if you needed to. Some people don't need two sinks (we don't as 2 aging adults). I'd want a prep sink that was at least 18" wide and 18" deep. Some could be up to 24" wide -- but you don't have room on your island for that.

I wouldn't do something smaller than 18" x 18". Trust me if you plan for a 15" overhang for seating, you'll have plenty of room for your guests to sit while you prep at the sink.

So glad you're starting to understand it all and when your kitchen is finished you'll be so glad you gave yourself enough room and followed the layout of the zones. Oh and you want your lower cabinets to be drawers as much as possible.

The only change to beuhl's design I might consider is with the lower cabinets. I might make the corner cabinet a "dead" cabinet and instead make the cabinet to the right of the stove a 3 drawer cabinet that is 24" wide to give you more storage. And I'd also make the cabinet to the left of the sink in the perimeter a 3 drawer 24" wide cabinet. And it appears you can make your cabinet on the island a bit wider too.

Pots & pans go in the corner susan. Corner susans can hold a lot of pots & pans. In my old Kitchen, I stored all my pots & pans, colanders, and some of my larger serving pieces in in our 36" lazy susan (it had the center pole).

CPArtist is talking about voiding out the corner - no storage there at all. It does allow wider cabinets on each side, but I think you need the storage space the corner provides.

If you do decide to void out the corner, please remember that you will need a minimum of 3" of filler b/w the corner and first cabinet on each side. If the range remains within 20" of the corner, you will need to have more like 6" to 9" of filler on the other side of the corner to be sure you clear the oven door and handles when opening the drawers/cabinets on the other side of the corner from the range.
