caterpillar damage or something else?

Hello!

Well, something ate half of a rose bud, and has chewed on a second.

When I took the picture, I did see a tiny little green worm, maybe a half inch long. It disappeared when I tried to take a picture of it too.

And while trying to photograph the worm, I saw this long antennae, and wouldn't you know it, a katydid. So maybe the katydid chewed on the bud too?

I checked Baldo's site. Maybe I have two pests on this rose?

Katydids. they eat everything green. Mine are much smaller at this point. There are a lot of them here I'm hoping for some cicada killers this year as katydids and grasshoppers are also on their menu.

I had a couple buds look like that last year and all I seen was grasshoppers on our rose bush...

This is caused by a type of sawfly larvae. They are little worm like caterpillars that eat into the forming buds and surrounding leaves and create little webbed nests attaching the bud and leaves together. When they start getting older, you will see more evident black spots that almost look like coffee grounds on the leaves and in the webbing. This is their feces. If you pull the webbing apart and expose the bud, you will see the small larvae which are usually green in colour and can be quite small at first. There are sometimes 2 or 3 in the little webbed area. Some roses seem particularly susceptible to this type of Sawfly and others are rarely touched. William Baffin is one rose here that they absolutely adore and routinely attack in large numbers. No need to spray or dust as it will have limited effectiveness. Just pick them out of the cocoon and step on them, or use your finger and thumb and gently squish them around the bud and leaves.

10'!! Holy Cow!! They must really be happy, lol! Thats so cool. Everything looks great..except for that poor lil caterpillar. I wouldnt have the heart to let that happen, I hate wasps with a passion. Not even the Braconids. I'd rather kill the poor cat than have him be tortured like that, getting eaten from the inside, what a way to die. The only wasps I dont mind are the ichneumon wasps. They're scary lookin, esp the females..but harmless. My nicotiana marshmallow is covered in caterpillars right now. I dont care, as long as they stay away from the brugs. If they get on the brugs, they're fish food.

I do see some changes to the edges of the healthy plant you show for comparison purposes--some very slight thickening/puckering/browning. Could it be that the roma variety isn't as good at dealing with hot, dry wind and it's in a location that's less sheltered than your other plant of the same variety? this plant sits pretty much in the middle of my garden and nothing on the outer perimeter have shown any kind of damage. Tomatoes are particularly sensitive to herbicides. If your perimeter plants are less susceptible, it's possible they'd show no symptoms but your tomatoes would. That said, it seems unlikely that only the one plant would be affected by drift. My best guess is environmental or less likely but possibly a virus. What does the very newest growth on the affected plant look like?

Well we do have some type of crickets or grasshoppers too. Btw, do lizards eat those? I've seen a lizard... 3 floors up! I was rather impressed.

Yet I am also considering putting out boric acid and trying to get rid of a lot of these insects, since there seems to be no sure-fire way to keep them from coming inside. There is *one* loud cricket/grasshopper somewhere in the unit, near or in the fireplace (and the chimney is in the balcony area where the plants are). I can't deal with more following him/her. I dislike killing things but I can't deal with bugs inside.

I don't think we get cicadas here, so no cicada killers.

My vote is for the Katydid as the culprit- I had one trim several rosebuds just as they were opening. Just like yours, only the petal part was almost surgically scissored off; sepals were left unmunched. I posted here and ppl suggested Katydids, so I went back and rechecked the bush, sure enough I found one, and after removing it, the damage stopped ( they're pretty rare in my backyard)
