GrumpyDave's happy new kitchen
Comments (61)a2gemini, there are three knife trays in the drawer. On the left is a JA Henkels that I've had for many years. In the center is the Wusthof 7 slot tray and on the right is the Wusthof 14 slot tray. I bought both of the Wusthofs locally at Sur la Table even though I don't see the small one listed on their website. According to the dimensions listed they shouldn't have all fit but in fact they fit perfectly. I can also say that my Electrolux refrigerator has been perfect thusfar. It's the quietest fridge I've had in decades. I bought a couple thermometers and placed them in several areas inside and the temps are good and consistent too. I thought the interior lights that come up slowly was a gimmick until I needed a drink at night with no lights on and was able to quickly reach in for some water and close the door before being blinded by full brightness. Now I think it's a great feature....See MoreFiesta - time for my first set of dishes
Comments (26)Thank you all so much for posting your likes/dislikes with Fiesta! You are all so helpful. Eileen you are supersweet. I do not have a dillards near me. I will keep my eye out for sales at kohls and Macy's though. I don't think I will be buying the place settings. I don't have much use for the mugs and I dont think I will need as many bowls as I will the plates. That is one of the things I like about it. How easy it seems to buy exactly what you need while being able to mix and match such pretty colors. I am going to order a plate of the three colors so I can see it in person today. If I love it, which I have a feeling I will, I will start a wish list on Amazon and start ordering peices. I have already been scoping out ebay too. :) Of course I have a tendancy to go overboard so I already have visions of a platerack molding type thing going around the kitchen so I can have a "plate" backsplash for color and to have the smaller plates handy, and lots of mixing bowls and carafes on top of the cabinets for color there. I think I might have to see if one or two more colors will work with the mix if I am planning on open storage. I have a picture of a gorgeous white kitchen with tons of fiesta everywhere that I have saved for years. I don't think I will ever have that white kitchen but I think the fiesta will still work. I have no idea why I am so in to lots of happy colors all of a sudden but I am so looking forward to this. :) Makes me love my crazy butterfly curtains all the more. They were my best ebay bargain of all time and I am so glad I made a big stink when the people buying my last house wanted to write in the contract that I leave the two panels I had hung. I have the perfect spot for 5 of the panels in this house and I am going to use the 6th to get a roman shde made for the window over the kitchen sink. Best $100 including shipping I ever spent on ebay!...See MoreReview: KA DW KUDS30IVSS
Comments (9)I wanted to post an update now that we've run more loads through our new Kitchenaid DW. Normally six weeks might not be much of an update, but posts scroll off so fast (or just get lost these days by the server, LOL) that I thought it would be good to do this before it disappears forever. We are still running the KA a lot more often than our (mediocre) old Kenmore/GE. The fact that it cleans the cookware, which our old DW did not do well at all, means that a lot more big items are put in, which requires running it more often. We still have the issue with the soap dispenser not opening on rare occasions. Again, this very seldom happens, so I've been unable to figure out the "why?" The DW runs such hot water, however, with that stainless tub holding in the heat so much better than the old DW's plastic tub, that the loads have come out almost completely clean even without soap! Egg yolk residue and mashed potatoes are a bit difficult for the DW, although it's a total champ on grease and baked-on casserole crusts. I now soak the plates that have the egg yolk or potato residue with a little water, for a few minutes (while I'm putting glasses and silverware into the DW, for example). Then I load them into the DW - no scrubbing necessary, just a little hydration. The loads have all been on Regular or Pro Scrub cycles. I used the Heavy Duty cycle once but didn't find it was any more effective than the Pro Scrub. Virtually everything that has needed a little extra washing "ooomph" has fit into the two rows on the lower rack where the Pro Scrub cycle is aimed. On those rare occasions when an item is just too big for the Pro Scrub racks, then the Heavy Duty cycle is useful, while placing the item full-face-down on the lower rack. I still do miss the height of my old DW - there's one or two things that simply will not fit into the KA unless I lay it face down which takes up an entire rack. But in all other respects, the KA works like a champ and has made a huge difference in less time and effort spent on daily clean-up. With our old DW, I seldom ran it more than two or three times a week. There was so much it couldn't clean well, or that were too awkwardly shaped to fit. I really appreciate the flexible loading of the KA racks. We have so many odd or large items that are easy to fit into this DW. With the KA, I can run it twice a day because I know it will clean just about everything. Drying: I only have to wait 2 hrs 15 min after I push the Start button, to open up the DW and almost everything is dry (and hot to the touch!). If I wait 4 hours then the condensation drying makes everything completely dry. The one exception is the curved rims on plastic tupperware-type containers. This is because I load the plastic containers upside-down; if I loaded them on their sides the rims would drain, but conversely make it harder for the interior to drain well. I usually unload everything else first, then take the containers out and shake the water from the rims into the sink. They air-dry completely in an hour or so, and then get put away. My nephews Bosch has so far performed very well for them (its only 1 yr old, though) but they are a little unhappy with the smaller interior and long cycle times. We spent close to the same amount of money, but the KA has been a good fit for us. Were very satisfied with it, and hope it lasts, for at least a few years. And yes, we did opt for an extended warranty, just in case....See MoreDinnerware question for you
Comments (40)SnidelyWhiplash: In regard to your question about aluminum contacting ceramic ware: I have experienced aluminum marks on dinner ware during manual washing dishes. The marks came from aluminum pot, pans, skillets, and ice cream dippers. When an aluminum object rubs across a plate hard enough, the plate may get an aluminum mark similar to a pencil mark. These are normal accidental scrapes and dings that happen during the course of washing, rinsing, and racking a mixed load of dishes and cook ware. The term weld is descriptive of how tenacious the mark adheres to the substrate. There is no torch-like item involved. The marks develop a molecular bond stronger than paint and is difficult to remove. Run a little experiment. Take a ceramic crock and mark the rim with the edge of an aluminum pot. Now, try to remove the mark....See MoreRelated Professionals
