Help. Kentia Palm brown

Help! Mine Kenty Palm has brown leaves, brown/yellow tips and on top of that one of the stems turned yellow and its leaves are all like in the pic. What should I do?

You're probably watering too often. Only water when the soil is dry a couple inches down. Water enough so it comes out the drain holes in the bottom. But discard that water asap.

what do you fertilize with? Once about every 2 weeks half strength is enough.

Do you have a southern facing window? Put the plant directly in front of the window.

start by flushing the soil when it's dried out. You can place it in the shower and let it soak and drain for a bit.

Looks like it gets no light.

How often do you water? How much water do you give it? Do you water so about 15% of the volume comes out the bottom drain hole and flushes the soil. What do you fertilize with and how often?

Started watering once a week but as it was turning brown I changed to twice a week. I put about one pint of water each time. I was putting plant food each time but stopped as well for the same reason. I had it against a wall with no light; now I moved it to a corner and gets indirect light. Hopefully will get better?

Personally, I doubt it is "heated, dry air" causing the problem since it is not yet the heating season. Sounds like it could be in shock, or perhaps an error in watering. Do NOT keep the palm constantly wet. I allow mine to dry completely before a thorough watering. NEVER allow your Kentia to sit fro a prolonged period in a saucer of water. Most palms can't stand "wet feet", although you might get away with wet feet for a Majesty Palm, but they are harder to keep happy than most Kentias. Do NOT repot now unless you have reason to think your palm is rootbound in its present pot. I just repotted mine because it was pushing up out of its pot.

What sort of soil? sounds like it's too moist if mushrooms are growing in itÃ¢ÂÂ¦ needs to be really well drainingÃ¢ÂÂ¦ but you also need to water the heck out of it every month or so (allow water to pour through it, and out into your tub or better yet, outside)Ã¢ÂÂ¦ flushing out the built up salts in your soils which all house plants hate. I would NOT fertilize your Howea if its indoors more than once every 1-2 yearsÃ¢ÂÂ¦ fertilizers have lots of salts in them and can really do a palm inÃ¢ÂÂ¦ most potting soils have plenty of nutrients in them for a few years of use I find. You want to water it well, but let the soil dry out well, too (you can let it dry out to nearly the bottom of the pot.. this palm should handle that OK). What sort of 'filtered' water are you using? Hope it's not the same filtered water you use for showering and washing the dishes (those sorts of filters that take out all the calcium, making 'hard' water into 'soft' water?)Ã¢ÂÂ¦ cause that soft water is usually super hard on palm roots. Whereabouts are you, North Island, South Island? Can't imagine why Nikau should have problems. If those plants were growing in a nursery in complete shade before you got them then they need to be slowly acclimatised to sunlight. They will all grow in full sun, eventually. The ideal way is while they're still in pots you move them inceasingly into the sun over a few months or so. Morning sun is better at the start. New sun resistant fronds will grow but plant development will have been slowed down.

Hi there, I’m worried about my kentia palm:( he is constantly getting brown patches and tips but my main worry is that he has a browning outer layer on his base, I think it might be root rot but none of the leaves are yellowing or completely brown just constant patches or brown :( he also has these small dots under his leaves? if anyone could help me that would be great! He was one of my first house plants and I want to make sure hes ok! Also Im scared to take him out of his pot as I don’t want to shock him or cause unnecessary damage when I don’t have the things to fix it :(

I am not much of an expert in palms, but do know that while there are many kinds all of them are difficult to keep happy inside, even with well draining soil and proper watering. They're among the most challenging of house plants, and probably shouldn't be sold as such, but that never stopped anyone before ...

I'm sure success is possible, but be prepared to spend some time figuring it out.

Kentia is among one of the easier palms for the house. I would also suggest Rhapis (Lady palms), and various Chamaedorea species for those who struggle with palms. Of course, the most available species is one of the most notoriously difficult (Ravenea rivularis; Majesty Palm).

Regarding your plant, there is no indication how long you have had the plant. It may just be acclimating to new conditions. It isn't sitting under an air-conditioning duct, is it? Also, how sure are we that it is a Kentia, I was inclined to thinking it might be a Dypsis lutescens (but not sure from here).

Subtropix, I bought the plant about five months ago. No air conditioning. Kentia is what it said on the label, bought it in a garden centre and it was quite expensive so I hope it is!
