Mommyc - The sport is very pretty so far. If it were me I would dig it up, wash the soil off and perform surgery with a sharp knife to divide it off from the other shoot & then replant separately. Sports are very common on hostas but they aren't always as pretty as the one you have there. Only time will tell what it will look like when more stable. With respect to identity of the regular shoot - do you have a picture from later in the season last year? The texture of the leaves seems wrong but it could be just a trick of the lighting... Even reputable sellers are human and can make mistakes.

Jon, I am hoping you will get more comments from BS growers (Newhostalady, Mbug, etc.) as I can only offer observations from a new-owner's (2015) perspective. Denis also has a 2015 model ;-) and may have noticed something about it colouring up. (aside: I have noticed that some of your hostas do already, and will likely grow more in an upright fashion in their dappled environment as they have to reach for the sun. I think that aspect makes them even more attractive IMO.) What seems to be the same as last year is that my BS develops more colour as time goes on throughout the season....starts off pale then ramps it up, sun notwithstanding. I have mine in sun until around 1:00 (in shade now so I snapped a pic for you) so it is a lot lighter all over. I really like the deep green margins of yours and think it looks spectacular. I wouldn't move it - I think it will get more stunning for you as time goes on. :D fwiw. last August...was potted and under tree but it didn't get as much sun as it does planted this year. I am not sure if it will remain there - I think I may actually like its colouring a bit deeper. I hope NHL post a photo of hers...it has darker margins, crisper colours and way better looking than mine, as is Mbug's. BC has one too, I think? Jon, what degree of colour are you wishing to achieve compared to what you have at this point?

@Pretty Birds, The hosta to the left of Brother Stefan is Deja Blu. It has cool seed pods, too. @ConnieMay, my Brother Stefan is about 10 years old. It is on the southwest corner of my property, in front of a very old lilac that provides dappled shade except for 2 -3 hours of morning sun exposure. It is in zone 4b near Minneapolis at the 45th parallel, planted in clay overlaid with almost 20 years of compost, decades of decayed spruce needles and fine bark mulch. Here are a few leaves with several shades of green. It's near the far right end of the hostas in this picture. You can barely see it, peeking out of the ferny shade with El Nino in front of it and Queen of the Nile/Dee's Golden Jewel to its right.

I read from an "expert" that the best time to divide and transplant hostas ...... is late August to early September. Is there agreement--or not--on this? (I hope I don't stir up a hornet's nest here.)_ ===>>> im so offended.. i feel like you are cheating on me ... lol ... i live in ground freeze ... you must get it done ... early enough ... especially if you are dividing down to small pieces ... early enough.. that the soil settles ...and the plant can grab hold.. and not heave during late winter ... or early spring.. when you might not find it ... until its dried out too much ... with bigger clumps... its not that big a deal ... you do what you gotta do.. when you have time to do it ... just cut the flowers off .. if you need to do it now ... your ultimate GOAL is not pretty flowers ... and as to that goal ... its removing the sport.. or whatever ... it is not really about them looking perfect.. or pretty.. for the rest of the year ... if you can do it ... and they do.. good for you ... but again.. that is not the goal ... focus on your goal.. whatever it might be ... finally ... when you read tmi ... too much info.. try to hone in on the location of the person giving that info ... and see how it compares to where you are .... and not only in regard to hosta ... e.g. someone in TX relying on the experiences of someone in the PNW ... are going to get sketchy info ... to the TX experience ... that said.. hosta are very forgiving ... i mean really.. they survive on the driveway ... lol ken
