DD2 Budget Kitchen Redo

**Originally posted in the Decorating forum (April) since it wasn't full gut, but my day has been slow, so I thought I'd share on Kitchens also:

DD2 has been in her home almost seven years, but she has only recently “finished” the kitchen. Quotes are necessary since the breakfast room is still the “dog room,” but one day she will be able to use it for its original purpose. The cabinets are decent builder’s grade (aka nothing special but not falling apart) and they have not been in her budget to replace. The cabinets were first painted a medium grey, but decided it made the kitchen too dark and boring. So uppers are now an off white and she recently painted the base cabinets a dark blue - this step took her three years to muster the courage, but she is so happy she did. Purchasing the rug was the final push towards the happiness. I realize this kitchen won’t be a favorite for many, but a reminder that DD2 is only in her late 20’s and she has always embraced color. Some of you might remember her colorful MBR. She totally transformed it recently and I hope to share it soon - she still needs to have art framed.

A couple of before and after pictures. This is the kitchen with the previous owners' things..and wallpaper. Lots of flowers!

You can see a bit of the wooden dog/baby gate she had made in the photo above (just past the cupboard). The vinyl flooring was replaced a few years ago with the same hardwood installed in the rest of then house when it was purchased. It has held up great with her son and dogs. This was after she moved in (and just before cat food/water was moved to revamped laundry room).

DD2 purchased the cabinet hardware back when it was painted gray, going for a weathered nickel/copper combo finish. The screws on the bin pull are faux - real screws go in the back.

One thing about the kitchen she would like to change is the honking fridge, but the MBR is behind the wall, so can’t build it into a niche. Also, a counter depth fridge is smaller and she uses every square inch of her current appliance. I guess it gives her a place to display DGS artwork.

The same man that built my swinging porch bed made her reclaimed wood counters. It's stained then has an organic sealer.

One of the last things DD2 decided on was the tile. She wanted a subway tile but wasn’t happy with the flat look. We ran across this at a local flooring and tile showroom. It has a more handmade appearance to it with it’s wavy finish.

Rug to happiness. Cats must really love to have their photographs taken, because ours are always showing up in photos!

I gave DD2 the vintage pine cupboard years ago for her birthday. More recently she put the small microwave in the bottom (behind center door) to give her more counter space. She has changed every room since I previously posted about them on Atticmag. You can see a bit of the now different dining room in this picture.
