Iris I.D. help please
Comments (3)Nice. A free neomarica caerulea. Your iris will make new irises is you let the flowers touch the soil. They are called 'walking irises' or 'apostle plant' sometimes. The flowers get heavy and fall to the ground, then they send out roots. Once they are established, you can cut the rooted plant off of the parent and you have a perfect copy. Comments (7)The photo you linked to is not a Dutch iris, which grow from bulbs. It is a tall bearded iris, which grows from rhizomes. There are perhaps two dozen irises that look similar to that photograph, so it would work best if you could get a good photo of your iris next year so that we could try to help you find a name for it. Meanwhile, you should make sure your iris is not buried too deeply beneath the soil. Iris rhizomes like to be at the soil surface so that they do not rot from moisture. It will not need too much water this summer, depending on your zone, and will probably rest until next spring when it will bloom again, only with more flowers than this year. At some point you will have to divide the rhizomes, when they get too crowded and start to grow over one another. You picked a winner with this iris- it's a pretty yellow. Good luck with it! Comments (1)There are different versions with that stem and flower scheme/color that do all of what you said. Without knowing exactly what they are it's a crapshoot as to which eventual size. For 3-5' you'd be looking at Little Quick Fire or Fire & Ice, something along those lines. The larger one is regular Quick Fire. At any time you can trim the taller portions down to make more uniform shrubs (Paniculatas often don't grow uniformly; they'll send up big new stems at random each season). If one of those big random stems goes past 6' I would highly suspect Quick Fire, in which case you may want to move them before they get too large....See Morenummykitchen
