Fresh mushroom soil, now what?
Comments (21)again terminology seems to be confounding things, straight from the farm it is either spent mushroom growing medium, or mushroom compost nothing at all related to dirt or soil. it can be purchased in a blended form where other material like manures etc have been added, this closely resemble humus not yet at the soil naming stage. yes fresh mushroom compost is hot as it has not yet decomposed, we use it in the fresh state and plant in it almost straight away, keeping seedlings well watered and unmulched so the heat does no damage, generally about 2 weeks later all heat has gone so we can then start using mulch. currently local prices pick up are $5AUD per 1tonne bag, they no longer seem to use those smaller plastic bags any more. would suggest just lay it around existing plants leaving about 6" clearance, then in a few days mulch over it, we do no digging so we don't support the digging effort. len Here is a link that might be useful: lens straw bale garden...See MoreMushroom Risotto-Porcini Mushrooms-Truffle Oil
Comments (35)That sounds like a great place, and very nice people, Beachlily. I bet they'd love to hear from you. There's a couple of videos out there (at least) showing some techniques to making risotto. One is by Mario Batali, (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/02/dining/02mini.html?_r=1) and he's making asparagus risotto. He doesn't actually stir all that much. The other is Tom Colicceo, making roasted tomato risotto. I made that the other night, and it was quite good. In this video he shows his way of telling when the risotto is done. The only change I made to his recipe was to use vegetable broth. I'll put a link to that video below, but I don't know how to do more than one link, so I just included the address for the Batali video above. ) (By the way, I stumbled across that website when I did a search for tomato risotto [I have an abundance of tomatoes right now]. It looks like a pretty cool website, but I haven't had or taken the time to explore it further.) Sally...See Morestoring fresh fennel/anise
Comments (4)You can freeze bulbs whole or sliced for convenience. If the bulbs are a little soft, soak in water for about half an hour to revive them. Fennel bulbs do lose flavour and nutrients after about 3 days, however. Leaves can be frozen, but will be limp on thawing. OK for adding to foods, but not good for garnishing. Seeds should be stored in airtight containers in a cool, dry, dark place. Please note: Anise is NOT the same as fennel. They are two entirely different plants. Fennel is Foeniculum vulgare, but the bulbs usually come from Florence Fennel (F. vulgare azoricum), grown especially for the bulbs. Fennel is a perennial, and all parts of the plant can be used. Anise is Pimpinella anisum, an annual sometimes treated as a perennial, from which the seeds (aniseed), the only part of the plant used, are obtained. Comments (7)Where do you dispose of the residue that comes from cleaning an oil based paint brush? I will be using oil based primer for some of my cabinets... I use a metal can saved from canned beans, etc. to clean the brush in. Whatever the solvent, I save it into a clean empty Ragu pasta sauce jar. After a few days, the solids separate to the bottom and I use the clear solvent off the top for the first cleaning the next time I need to clean a brush. Finish cleaning up with fresh solvent; save that into a new jar, usually. I save because I'm often needing to clean a brush. Otherwise, I dump it into the (cold, no-fire, fire pit.) Any cleaning rags with oils/ solvents, get hung on the edge of the fire pit to dry and burned later. If you have no plans to need the solvent again, you can leave it in the can and set it outdoors, under cover (so it doesn't collect rain water) to evaporate. Once the solvent has evaporated & the solids are thoroughly dry, you can toss it into your regular garbage....See More- 10 years ago
