Then all the leaves drop and all you have are bare stem and collapse. Spores may spread on the wind for miles and last in the soil for years. Downy Mildew disease only affects garden impatiens Impatiens walleriana, but all varieties. New Guinea impatiens are not affected nor any other garden flowers. Wet foliage, cool temperatures (especially at night), and moist air are ideal conditions for disease development. Beds receiving overhead sprinkler irrigation, because the foliage does not dry quickly are especially vulnerable. There is currently no worthwhile treatment and no resistance at all. Reputable nurseries have just about stopped selling impatiens. Once you have the problems, forget having impatiens until breeders have genes for resistance, probably biotech added since no one has found any resistance.

well I'll be darned . I grow a number of perennial salvias that look nothing like this plant . I just googled annual salvia ( thanks thedecoguy!) and sure enough that is exactly what it is . I would never in a million years have guessed a salvia ! Thanks so much

Let's try using the botanical names to clear up the confusion. Lonicera japonica, which is the species normally denoted by the common name 'Japanese Honeysuckle' is most definitely a vine. If there's nothing for it to climb it can pile itself up quite high but that doesn't stop it being a twining vine by nature. If the shrub you have in mind is definitely not a vine then it definitely isn't Lonicera japonica. Perhaps one of the shrubby invasives is known locally where you are as Japanese Honeysuckle? Which is why botanical names are the only way to be really sure what we're talking about,
