Moldy Smelling Bathroom
Comments (2)My home is not as old but had pretty much the same moldy smelly problems from previous water damage. The PO's did lay down new linoleum and install a new vanity and mirror but that only served to cover up problems lying within the walls. The wonderful :( plastic tiles were popping off left and right and underneath them was mold and mildew. I bit the bullet and gutted it. I had a new tub w/shower installed, all new drywall put in along with insulation, tiled the shower walls and put in a new toilet and flooring. I even replaced all the wood trim and put in a new door. It turned out very nice (I think!), it took a month but would have been less, had not my tile guy decided to take a vacation in the middle of it. I kept the vanity and mirror. My total costs ran right up next to 3K. If you can do the tiling yourself, you can probably save some labor costs right there....See MoreBad smell from bathroom sinks
Comments (6)I've had a bad smell coming from my sink. Last fall I pured Liquid Plumber in, let it set and flushed it down. I poured vinegar (straight) in, let it set and flushed it down. I used bleach and flushed it down. Each time, after a day the smell came back. We left for 3 months this winter and when we came back there was no smell. Now,after a week it started again; I poured Simple Green in the sink-straight so it would set in the goose neck pipe underneath; then flushed with HOT water in about an hour. Smell went away, then 2 days later it is back again. Now...I am thinking that because it's an earthy/moldy smell,, could it be a broken pipe underneath and the insulation is wet and rotten ... could that be it? We also remodeled that bathroom 4 years ago and had a new sink put in, but not new plumbing. HELP PLEASE! We use Mentadent toothpaste, but rinse it well with warm water afterwards. Our other bathroom has never been remodeled and hubby uses it every day and it doesn't smell at all....See MoreMystery burnt/cigarette smoke smell in bathroom
Comments (87)The smell is coming from some type of mold or fungus growing in your PVC pipes. I have this problem in the kitchen of one of my beach condos. Every couple of years I have to replace the disposal, and the pipes under the sink. The smell is SOOOO strong, and nothing will get rid of it. It took years to figure out the cause. I have soaked the PVC pipes in about everything, and it will not go away. But it is seasonal, flares up worst in the fall. Smells exactly like stale cigarettes. Will permeate everything, blankets, soft surfaces, everything stinks. The smell will penetrate black garb bags, thick ones, even 2 or 3 over each other (I wrapped the pipes to buy the same ones and it stunk up my car, even triple wrapped). I have no idea what type of mold this is, or fungus, but it's bad, and it's like the fungus smell is actively spewing from the sink. It will stink up the entire place. I'm not sure how to really solve the problem for good. So I solve it periodically by replacing the PVC pipes under the sink and the disposal. Then gone. When it comes back, initially it smells vaguely organic like rotting cucumbers for a day or so, then like cigarettes, stale cigarettes. I hope that helps. I wish a biologist would find this blog and ask for a sample. I'd love to know what I'm dealing with. I'm happy to donate an old disposal for testing when it happens again. I've smelled this smell in nature too in swampy areas, but it's MUCH stronger when contained inside....See MoreMusty/moldy smell from vents in home
Comments (13)You can install it at the foundation and pull air from the living space through the crawl space and exhaust it to exterior. Mine is installed with a flex connection to a supply grill in the floor of a closet. It "pushes" rather than "pulls" air into the crawl. It's the same configuration recommended by John Tooley a number of years ago. I suggest you confer with the consultants at Advanced Energy in Raleigh about the configuration they've found to work best in your area....See MoreNicole
