Kill 'em. Kill em all
Comments (16)I agree about eating the purslane. We use it in salads a lot, although I must say the hybridized cultivars are more tender in flavor, more upright, and have larger leaves than their wild cousin. But even the wild stuff is great in a salad, and as others have pointed out, very nutritious. As for the rest of the weeds, I'd just smother them with straw or bedding hay. If you've ever used a bale of hay or straw before, you know how it comes apart in "books" or "sheets." Simply lay these books side by side to cover the whole area. Nothing will grow through them. The best part is that as they break down they feed the soil, so by next year you can simply make some holes through the hay/straw and do your planting. I have done this numerous times and it works great. -Diggity...See MoreMosquitos are killing me!
Comments (6)you need to search out sources of standing water. check your gutters, the saucers underneath your pots, neighbors' yards etc. several of my neighbors' garages in my alley-way have gutters that fill with water....so i took pieces of mosquito dunks and put them in there. i just need to be vigilant and check them every so often also, in the corners of my yard, i have small buckets of stagnant water that i also put mosquito dunks in. I am hoping that they will use the buckets to lay their eggs and have the larvae perish before becoming adults...See MoreMy husband is about to fog!!
Comments (13)I have studied this over time, and can tell you that your husband's fogging with synthetic poisons is the most destructive thing he can do. It will kill all of the mosquitoes, as well as every beneficial insect in the chain, and poison the area as well....and you have small children. Can you spell c a n c e r? That is extreme, but chemicals in the area area absorbed into our bodies, and they are toxic...which is why they kill mosquitoes! They act on the CNS and acucmulate in our bodies. Moreover, studies show, that after your husband kills all the mosquitoes, they will bounce back quickly, and absent any of the natural predators, will become worse than ever. A better approach is to work with nature, and remove the areas that provide mosquitoe larvae it's opportunity...i.e. standng water, moist uncut areas of hedges, etc. Removing their habitat removes them without killing the other insects. As suggested above, using natural approaches is a much sounder approach all the way around. Everybody wins...except the mosquitoes, of course!...See MoreMosquito Dunks or Hydrogen Peroxide to kill Gnats?
