Comments (12)That's a good question, and here is the answer.... 'In primis' there is no mention of the cv. name 'Black Star' anywhere. Then, You will soon realize that in Chahinian's mind (The S.trifasciata Var. p.42) 'Black Gold' is a totally different plant. But I know very well this plant: it is grown by the millions in Holland and it is swiftly wiping away all the others in the 'Futura' group. In the trade it is named 'Black Gold' and it is a cv. of 'Futura Superba' (or 'Futura Simplex' as for Chahinian) with no cross stripes. From leaf cutting , it produces all green, no striped, plants like 'Onyx' (sensu Grootscholten) or a reversión without yellow margins that often sprouts from Ziad's 'Midnight Shine'. (another controversial cv, indeed!). And we have a 'Laurentii' size of this cv., often named 'Black Gold' , too! My plant, by the way, doesn't reach the size of a full developed 'Laurentii', but stays at about 50cm of heigth. Leaves are half the width of any 'Futura', and half the heigth of 'Laurentii'. This cv. may well be Chahinian's 'Compacta' (pag.23). On my experience it only produces all green , not banded plants from leaf cuttings. These plantlets, are, of course, 'Nelsonii'. Need I say more? confused? well, me too!...See MoreI have roots!!!!
Comments (43)Nancy, I've heard the same thing but have also heard a few times that water and soil roots are the same or at least similar. I don't know what the real truth is, but certainly the safe way to go is to leave it in water as you suggest. Anyway, as Katrina says, it's interesting to be able to watch the process happen in water, something we can't see if it's in soil. My only concern is that the offset is completely under water. Sans are far from aquatic aquarium plants so I'm not sure that will work for very much longer. Russ...See MoreGenerous Sans Group - Sans ‘Green Mermaid’ ???
Comments (48)Sooooo….. Banded Nelsonii looks very similar but they’re not identical or not 2 different names for the same variety/sport/whatever, unlike “Whitney” & “Silver Flame,” I think, having learned they’re equivalent after agreeing to pay for an unseen Silver Flame when told it was “super rare.” And we all know “rare” rarely means rare these days, so I thought this person was reliable. Maybe she didn’t know. Anyhow, I first read about “Green Mermaid” here around the beginning of last year: https://thehouseplantguru.com/2019/08/03/more-exciting-new-houseplants-aglos-and-more/ http://www.turriplantas.com/single-page.php?id=6&lang=en It took me until last fall to find it available, & of course paid way too much, but was obsessed for whatever reason 😏 I have been equally obsessed w trying to find the “Black Princess Sandy” since, but think I randomly just did, & @ Home Depot no less!? I rarely even look at their house plants, but making multiple trips this week due to major diy renovations, I needed a moment’s distraction. Still not entirely convinced because I’ve seen others incorrectly labeled, but doesn’t seem to have near the amount of lighter green Black Coral has. (You can easily find the patent, hence description, but it’s far from one that leads to automatic ID!?) Those 3-4 plants have already given me several babies so I’m definitely not opposed to sharing/trading, esp for the aforementioned Banded Nelsonii, a true Silver Queen, or Singer’s Silver (which has proven even harder to find after mine was frozen), among others, if anyone discussing it here is interested. I have a LOT of aroids, so open to those, Hoya, & well, lots of stuff 😬 I’m horrid at checking messages &/or following up on convos, but will try~just assume it won’t be immediately 🤷🏽♀️...See MoreIs this a Silver Queen, Moonshine, Silver Sword...?
Comments (37)@Stush You totally deserve it!! Your kindness and generosity are something I've never experienced before and your advice and knowledge are priceless and so appreciated. You are just pure awesomeness!! Also, I know you say you don't need them all, and hands down your Whitney is super stunning💚, but I was able to track down a banded nelsonii. If you would ever like one you have a standing offer for that one from me as well🤗 I was only able to get 2 stalks so I'm sure it'll take a minute for it to pup but once it does, if you want one, it's all yours😊 @Russ Well hello there!! It's nice to finally meet you! I've read many of your posts and have learned so much from you too! I would love to send you a silver queen😊 I can send both of the ones in the photos I posted for Stush if you would like. The leaf cutting one has grown taller and is pushing up another pup💚 I've never shipped plants before so any advice on how to package would be fantastic lol. I have lots of cotton balls to help protect the leaf cutting pups and I feel like they would do better being shipped in the nursery pot with the soil, but not sure about how to wrap the roots of the taller one🤔 Again, super nice to meet you! You and Stush are sansevieria legands! I'm so thankful for everything you guys have written on these forums!😊 @PMA FTW I would be more than happy to send you a nursery pot of the leaf cuttings of the silver queen for the price of postage. As Stush previously mentioned further down in the post, the leaf cutting will produce juvenile plants but their pups will become larger. I have a nursery pot of leaf cuttings that has currently put 3 pups up, they're each about a half inch tall right now. I can add photo when I get home if you would like to see. I also want to emphasize, I've never shipped plants before so any advice would be wonderful. Silver Queen also have a very thin layer of protective coating on them and the smallest scratch can cause a scar on the leaf. I learned the hard way when I was trying to get a single piece of perlite out of the crown of one. Next time, I fight my OCD and live with it until the next leaf gently pushes it out of the way on its own lol😂...See MoreRelated Professionals
