How much room around nepeta do dahlias need?

This year I planted some of my dahlias in my border of nepeta. When they went into the ground there was about 24 inches clear, but now that the nepeta has filled out the dahlias (yet to emerge) are not in the sun. Will they still come up or do I need to clear out even more of the nepeta? It's such a sprawling plant that perhaps the combination was a bad idea?

I would definitely clear more of it away so the dahlias can come up, and assuming this plant 'nepeta' is fairly short, it will be fine sprawling under as the dahlias grow.

Most likely there will be fierce competition for available water and nutrients, though, which can invite all sorts of bug infestations if you don't watch it closely and avoid stressed conditions.

IME Nepeta do well with lots of heat, lean soil and need very little water.

then they stay reasonable compact but still spread.

but if you combine them with Dahlias and keep those happy and flowering, the Nepeta will probably sprawl as they are completely overfed.

I would wack them back now (they probably regrow quickly) to give the dahlias room and plant the tubers in another place next season.

do you happen to know what kind of Nepeta species you have?

About the same as you'd reserve for a small- it's the blooms that are giant- not so much the plants. A miniature or BB can put out just as bushy a plant as an AA or A. The ones that are termed "Border Dahlias" take up less room because they are short- but they can still be bushy. We usually do 3' by 3' but they can be planted as close as 2' by 2'. Any more crowded than that & you're asking for trouble.

Thanks for the responses. We are also minimal users of the MW. Otherwise, the thing would have been specified 6 months ago along with the other appliances. Now we have to get drawings to the cabinetmaker and I'm thinking he's going to want something more specific than "throw it on that shelf to the left of the fridge." We did get it together enough to get the receptacle in roughly the right spot. I like the looks of yours, foodonastump, but I think we need ours to sit on the shelf because the mixer and food processor sit on the counter below and there's an undercounter light. Otherwise, I'd steal that idea in a second! (Am I correct that there's no place to hang a UCL in this installation? So I did some very casual searches last night and it looks like allowing 2 ft width will not be very limiting. A few are slightly over, but it's not like I have my heart set on a particular model. It does need to hold a plate, a soup bowl, once in a while a mixing bowl. I've always had one on a counter with plenty of airspace to the sides and above, so for all I knew "everyone knows" that you need 2 inches, or some such thing. Guess not!

faulstr- The rule of thumb is what you will be comfortable with, which varies from person to person. It's both a physical feeling and a visual one. For me, wider is better, and I am a little surprised at how narrow a walkway some people are using...but if it works for them, great. I know you're planning right now, but is there a space in your present house that is any way similar where you could put an existing couch and just live with it for a day? Even if you don't want to move a couch, several dining room chairs with a blanket thrown over them could give you a sense of what width opening you're comfortable with.

Thanks, and I will take the advice of both of you. It's also a heads up not to extend the nepeta to the rose border, which I was planning to do. Even though it's a classic combination..
