To fertilize or not to fertilize
Comments (4)Fertilize what with what? Plants can't take up N or much anything else until roots are growing. Roots will start growing just as leaves begin to grow. Fruit trees where you are will probably best be given quick release N at about first week of April if Spring's a bit early. Look at the long range forcast- Accuweather has me getting 17 F. in a couple of weeks and Im just 40 miles up from NY City. Wait till you see some green in the buds....See MoreFertilize Or Not To Fertilize During Blooming
Comments (1)In my experience with all the phals I have. No matter if it's in bloom or not I continue to fertilize every other week with my general orchid fertilizer. Since I fertilize every other week, I don't use full strength fertilizer every time. I cut the scoop in half and fertilize that way. Ive always had beautiful phals and I continue to have them yea after year. It's prolly more of a personal preference, but I don't have any problems. Best of luck with your phal....See Morebone meal fertilizer or liquid fish fertilizer
Comments (13)I started using fish emulsion for my roses last year after it was recommended by Marissa at Greenmantle Nursery. Marissa grows her roses organically. I tried multiple brands, and they do not all smell alike--with some the stench is so strong it is enough to make me want to keel over. The difference appears to be in the way they process the fish, with some cheapy brands having the most disgusting odor. I have found two brands whose products smell MUCH better than the others and which give good results with my roses. My favorite is Gro-Tone from Espoma. It's 2-2-2, and while it does smell fishy, they've added mint which makes it less so. The other brand I like is Neptune's Harvest. Their fish fertilizer is cold-processed so as not to destroy "all the good stuff". It too smells fishy, but it is a much fresher smell than other brands. I use mostly Gro-Tone, and diluted to half the strength recommended on the bottle. I find that is plenty and works well with most of my roses (only a few are more avid feeders and need a boost from a powdered organic fertilizer). Comments (22)If you examine the ingredients list on a bag of Miracle Gro potting soil, I believe that you will find that it contains "locally" obtained ingredients. That implies that the quality will vary with manufacturing location. I have had bad results using Miracle Gro potting soil bought in the Chicago area. Last year, I used a home made mixture of 2/3 peat moss and 1/3 perlite (by volume) without lime and it worked fine, but, note that my fertilizer solution contained calcium. I buy peatmoss on sale at Menards for about $5 per 2.2 cubic feet. Perlite is $10.23 per 4 cubic feet at http://www.bfgsupply.com/UserFiles/2008Catalog/5_Soil.pdf. That is cheaper than any premix you can buy....See Moreaurorawa
