Have you had the ikea cabinets yourself? I'm just worried about the durability of the MDF IKEA boxes. They need to last a minimum of 20 years....

Scherr's and Barker's RTA cabinets also make custom doors for IKEA cabinets. They do it all of the time. The finishes at Barker's are somewhat limited. Scherr's will do any finish you desire. I know that Scherr's can do all of you appliance panels. They are a custom cabinet manufacturer who does RTA cabinets.

I used Scherr's for my entire kitchen, not just the doors. I will use them again, too. If you order from IKEA, you will be limited in the sizes of the cabinets and customization is limited. It may prove to be easier to order the entire kitchen from one of the RTA manufacturers. It's an option worth exploring.

Conestoga and Dunsmuir are two other companies that you can get custom doors from. I'm doing IKEA and custom doors.

we've been in three kitchens with ikea cabs and the durability is fine. In theory, i am sure there are cabinet lines with more durable, better quality boxes. But the price point will be exponentially above the ikea price point. I gather that even if you go one, two and three price steps above ikea, the quality will at best be the same as ikea's but quite often lower quality. So, if you are deciding between ikea at $ and something else at $$$$, and price isn't an option, get the more expensive. If you deciding between ikea at $ and others at $$, get the ikea. We have also done the semi handmade doors and they are beautiful.

Ikea boxes are not just inexpensive, they're a great value. In 1987 we put in Ikea cabinets in our previous house. The current owners just re-installed them into their finished basement. I'm not kidding, He told me they just replaced a couple of doors and drawer fronts.

We're doing Ikea with the high gloss white doors on the perimeter cabs and I am currently looking for grey textured laminate fronts for the island.

Beachem - we're also looking at Conestoga, their website says though that they only sell to professionals. As we're not using a cabinet maker or KD, how do we buy them?

The IKEA interior organizers are supposed to be great also.

Pippa, Dunsmuir has textured laminate doors for ikea cabs. I am off to look at Conestoga....

We are in the process of installing an Ikea kitchen right now with custom doors/drawers/panels made by Scherr's. I cannot speak to the durability yet, but so far I am very happy with the functionality. I had the fear also about 'putting lipstick on a pig', but I don't really think this is the case here.

I wanted a lot of drawers and I wanted good hardware, and Ikea makes this easy for a very reasonable price. I did not want the Ikea doors however. Using Scherr's allowed me to get exactly what I wanted for looks, with the functionality of Ikea.

The only place I'm not 100% sure I made the right decision is with the cover panels. I got flat panels, and they are 3/4" thick instead of the 1/2" that Ikea sells. I did not pay attention to this detail when I ordered from Scherr's, and in one spot in the kitchen, that extra 1/4" over 2 panels is making things harder to fit.

Also, I wish I had specified the panels had the rails like the doors/drawers. And I might prefer the looks of the thinner panels. It will all be ok though and I'm very happy with the doors and drawers.

Did you end up doing 3rd party doors? Who'd you get them through?

Has anyone used Dendra cabinets from Oregon? I like one of the veneers they offer but haven’t heard a lot of reviews and theist recent review on Yelp wasn’t good. Thanks!
