can i repot a boston fern with miracle grow
Comments (3)Not all MG has fert in it, but I would agree, also worrying it might not be evenly mixed or too strong for house plants - or I'll forget and fertilize when fert'ing other plants. If all your plants are in that, the last wouldn't be a concern for you. The issues folks can have with peaty potting soil usually take more than a few months to manifest, so, worst-case-scenario, you won't like it and can change it again in the spring. Compared to having its' roots crammed/with no soil, the fern would probably pick the MG even if something else might be preferable. Ferns aren't that picky, IMHO/E. FWIW, I put a few plants in the ground last spring and they stayed evergreen, through a winter-low of 25 here. Same thing at my Mom's house a few miles away. They seem to be much more concerned about not drying out....See MoreTold you growing hostas from seeds can be fun
Comments (18)Thank you all for the nice comments. It's very encouraging. Hostafrenzy, this one is a little bit in between the natural way (let the bees do the work) and real hybridizing (making deliberate crosses by hand). I started out with a hosta that had a lot of features I like, H. 'Grand Slam'. Put it apart and surrounded it with other plants I like, such as H. 'Sky Dancer'. Harvested the seeds from Grand Slam and got a whole bunch of very different seedlings from them. Some look more like mom, others probably like that. I've learned some hostas give a very diverse offspring, while others produce rather uniform seedlings. None of the seedlings however look the same as the motherplant. Hope this helps you a bit. Comments (9)You have a very nice plant! One of my two 'Sum and Substances' gets it fill of sun and performs also well with watering every few days when there is no rain. S&S progeny also does well. I read here often that hostas are only shade tolerant and sun is the way to go. That is true when you have a lot of water and time and adds to garden upkeep. That means to newbies that they have frequent watering and time at hand all figured out before planting in sun. Bernd...See Morewhat kinds of ferns can you grow on the shelf of a pond?
Comments (4)There are lots of ferns that will grow in water, but many of those need the water to be moving. What you need are ferns that normally grow in swampy areas, in water that's not moving. Choice will also depend on the climate you're in. Acrostichum speciosum is a nice one that is okay in full sun but it can grow quite large and it needs a warm climate....See Morebragu_DSM 5
