Need help: refinish a vintage Louis XV style table (pictures)?
Comments (8)I have a funny story about French Provincial. I had a dealer friend send two high powered buyers to an antique furniture store I used operate. The couple bought quite a lot of expensive furniture from me. I stopped by the dealerÂs store to offer him five hundred cash as a token of my appreciation. The dealer refused the money so I simply picked out what I thought was a nice piece of 50's 60's FP for $500.00. It was a nice half moon server with a marble top but not worth anywhere near that much money. I decided to strip it to get rid of the off-white paint. I figured I could stain or whitewash what ever wood was underneath. Underneath the paint I discovered a fabulous inlaid scene of a guy playing a violin for his girl.. It had in fact been a much older French piece that someone had tried at some time to update to F.P. There's no luck like dumb luck. IÂve found many pleasant surprises under paint. This table unfortunately does not look like itÂs worth stripping unless you simply enjoy doing that kind of thing. ItÂs a great feeling you get from restoring an old quality piece and turning it back into something useable....See MoreJust curious.... does anyone here collect vintage china?
Comments (41)Hello fellow China Collectors. I am collecting dessert/salad plates in mismatched patterns. I collect the sugar bowls and creamers too. I am working on a business plan to rent props for parties. I have always adored "girlie golden items" sweet flowers...painted tea pots items the pin up girls from the curvy era would use on their kitchen tables dawning an Apron and a smile. I do not care about the value of the dishes. I use them all every day. The trade name of Shabby Chic which still has all of us women in admiration of it's sweet design, calls my name in every dusty shop - mothball smelling - church basement - ninety degrees in the sun venue. I so enjoy the treasure hunt that my IBS starts to rumble. I am caught up in the frenzy of my own accord...fortunately prior to stepping into the hunting grounds...I prepare my quest with great walking shoes...cool loose clothes...a light meal. I can not Thank You all enough for posting pictures of your lovely finds and prized China. My seek and find missions are the highlight of my weekends. I am now collecting cute plastic - backyard fun acrylic plates and wine gobblets for my event planning company. I paint old furnishings. One day...God willing...I will either get this business rolling or my Family will sell it all in an Estate Sale - when I am old and grey. I hope they will keep my bird bud vases for these little pink birdies take little space up on a windowsill.. I am certain a nice Middle Aged Women like myself will see them and use them or loan them out for a grand Tea Party some fine day - after I have left this sweet soil. Enjoy your finds...no dust on the dishes...fine or dinnerware...Share you collection with a few girl pals paired with crumpets because girls - or boys - we all just go around once....See MoreDisplaying vintage/antique linens
Comments (13)Allison, lovely, as always. I like the framing idea. Allison's choice of very simple frames is instructive. You want the linens to be the things to which you eye is drawn. If they are very intricate cutwork, or very lacy, consider a pale blue or taupe backing board so that the pattern is easy to see...and be sure that all your framing materials are acid free museum board. Otherwise, over time, they will damage and discolor your linens. If you decide to hang them over a wooden ladder, put a piece of acid-free tissue or felt behind them. The wood will also transfer acids and stains. And wherever you can, USE them! Homemaker, I actually love to iron, probably because I was taught very young how to iron linens so that it is easy and satisfying. I think I'll post about that......See MoreHow to Wash Vintage New Linen?
Comments (59)Well I've been in contact with Stevens Linens in New Hampshire. The company got in contact with the previous owner for me and this is what the previous owner said of my fabric. Mind you this may or may not be their fabric, but he recognized it, but not the label. I think the label would be recognizable for sure. The label should be in the archives of the business. Anyway, this is what the previous owner of Stevens Linens reported to the present day Stevens Linens personal, whom I contacted: "I can't identify the label but I can identify the fabric. It is made with a cotton slub yarn that we used in a lot of upholstery fabric starting in the 1950's. This swatch is very similar to a fabric we wove for Schumacher and was actually used on the Kennedy rocker in the Oval Office. I would say between the label and the fabric it is from the late fifties or very early 60's." Pretty interesting isn't it....See MoreRelated Professionals
