This Yamaha provides excellent sound. I think we just need the conversion cables or boxes. Any advantage to boxes v. the cables? Brands?

Everything is stacked on separate shelves. The Yamaha is on top. Below are: New Comcast Xfinity cable box; 2015 Sony BluRay for DVD's and streaming from Amazon Prime. The TV is a 2010 Sony Bravia.

The TV is connected to the Yamaha by component cables, although it does have HDMI ports.

Now rises the question of how to control all of this remotely. We were using a Harmony remote. Now we want to use the Xfinity speech-recognition remote for the cable box. Problem? Not a problem? Back to a table full of remotes?

You could run the hdmi cable out from the xfinity box into the blue ray player hdmi in Port. Then the hdmi out cable from the blue ray player, connect to either one of the converted cables or box, either is acceptable, then you can plug those cables into your Yamaha receiver, and use your regular 3 cables from the Yamaha out to the in Port of the TV. The hdmi cables carry both audio and video signals, when you use the converter cables you are splitting the audio and video signals, two for audio and one for video. That way you have both of the hdmi capable devices hooked together. As to the remote control if you have the proper codes for your devices usually one remote control can control multiple devices. When they came to install the xfinity did they not hook everything up for you and set up the remotes? I always make sure the direct TV guy does that when they come change stuff.

Doing it that way you would only need one converter cable. You can get them at Radio shack or any electronics department.

I am assuming that the blue ray player does have hdmi for the above scenario.

Another option is to do the xfinity box and Blu-ray separate into the Yamaha in that case you would need 2 of the converter cables. Xfinity box hdmi out to the input of the Yamaha for the cable using the converter. The hdmi out of the Blu-ray to the input of the Yamaha for the DVD using a second converter cable. Then your regular component 3 plug cables for the Yamaha out to the TV in. And since your TV does have hdmi in Port you could actually use another converter cable going the other way, from the component of the Yamaha out to the hdmi of the TV in. But you don't have to.

I don't mind buying two or three converter cables, but would your first plan be superior to the second one?

The DirecTV box we had for years had ports like the Yamaha's. The Comcast guys had no clue how to connect their box (with HDMI only) to the Yamaha.

Our old BluRay also had ports like the Yamana's, but it won't support CC for streaming movies. The new BluRay that will support CC has only HDMI.

I will call Radio Shack to see if they have what we need. Yesterday we looked for converter cables (or boxes) without finding any at: Best Buy, Walmart, Sears. I see the RCA brand of cables online through Amazon, but hoped to have the cables in hand faster. Our son is coming this week to try to help his Aged Parents with this!

I am very surprised best buy didn't have them and Walmart too. I would bet radio shack does but of course their prices are always a little higher. Either way will work. With the 2 done individually you will just have to select the individual items input to see that on the TV. We did have ours run through the Blu-ray player then into the receiver and left the receiver set on Blu-ray because that's how the tech had set it up. When I set it again when ever we get back into the house I will probably do the individual inputs.

I had just bought a new receiver and Blu-ray player the Sunday of the storm! I was in the process of installation and set up when the storm started and the power went out. I may never find the manuals and instructions after this mess.

Well...it seems that there *are* no cables to convert HDMI to Analog. When I ask, people say, "Who would want to do that -- go from Digital to Analog? It would be a very small market." I think the converter cables we've been discussing only go the other way, from Analog to HDMI. That's what they tell me at Radio Shack and at Abt.

Now I think I have to squeeze behind our bookcase to see what speakers we have so that I can buy an appropriate new receiver...one with HDMI.

Among lower-end receivers, the Yamaha Rx-V481 looks comparable to my existing Yamaha HTR-5460 regarding power. (Unless we were upsold on the Yamaha by the installer in 2001.)

Raven, I seldom even GET a manual with any gizmo these days. They just want the customer to 'look it up online and download it'. Any halt to your rain? You must be ready to chuck it all and move to the top of a big hill. (Not the very top...lightning.)

I had just bought from best buy a pioneer receiver at a very reasonable price. I can look at their site and give you the item number of it. You are correct that the main manual was online but they had a small install booklet I was using. I am sure it will be available online too.

The help at Radio Shack must not be able to read. The $40 gizmo clearly says it is HDMI TO COMPSITE. I would need two. The Sony DVD player has only one HDMI connection.

$80 is still less than a new receiver, and there is a Shack in the next town.

Our DS is coming here tomorrow morning to eyeball the whole mess. At least I've gotten the new Comcast Xfinity remotes to work in two locations. Pretty nifty to *speak* what you want and have it appear. (I'd read that voice command was something Jobs was working on before his death. He'd he'd said it was for his parents -- and other people -- Seniors who find this so daunting.)
