Replacing Windows--2 big windows or 4 narrower?
Comments (4)Tibbrix and busybee3, the photo and your advice that window coverings for that width would be practical, were just the reassurance I needed. Two window people came out Monday and both were very good. I have decided that a 70" x 70" window will go on either side of the fireplace, about 11.5" from the floor. The problem now is deciding color of the window frames. For the type of window I've selected there are only 3 color choices for the window frame -- bright white, taupe, and bronze (so dark, almost black). Choosing the frame color is the tough choice now. White does not look good on the home exterior, so only two choices left to go with. My home is contemporary with traditional furniture so that dark should go. Any thoughts or advice?...See MoreSound Reduction in Remodel
Comments (7)2x6 construction with foam insulation plus the double drywall layer. It's the voids in the sheathing and window area that allow sound through. Foaming will fill those and air seal completely. It's NOT cheap. And then you may need to worry about fresh air exchanges in your master suite, especially when running a bath fan. You can't exhaust air from a room unless it's replaced in some way. That replacement will either come from the rest of the house that is less tight (supposing sufficienctly undercut doors) or it will come from an open window or a duct designed to supply replacement air. The latter is the better option, as you can then keep your sound cocoon intact, and also filter the incoming air for pollens, etc....See MoreSeriously stupid question...can I put glass in an exterior door?
Comments (18)Yes this can be done. There are several options to adding a doorlite. Search Doorlite kits, doorlite frames. Most kits will come with a metal frame / metal trim. Creastview doors is a great place to start if you're looking for wood trim. You can also have a local glas company cut / make a double pane insert. It is as 'simple' as cutting a hole in the door, adding the glass, and trimming it out. The difficulting is finding the proper trim/moulding that holds the glass in place while covering up the exposed edge of the new hole. You must also consider door contruction. Although old slab doors are not that attractive, they're sturdy and well built. Even so, I wouldn't cut closer than 8" from the edge. I recently bought a '52 mid century ranch that had a solid 42" slab door. I cut three 12x18 holes in the door, fitted them with 1/2 dual pane tempered window inserts made at a local glass shop, and trimmed them out with trim that I retro fit to fit the spacing....See MoreReplacing old single glass panes with new double glazed panes.
Comments (32)There have always been good and bad design, builders and materials. I see it being built everyday with the garage as the front door. The main house of my project is fairly well built - to the standards of the day (balloon framing - bricks on their side for the footing etc) - the garage and studio above was not. there are many great homes and buildings that have deferred maintenance often ironically because they were a cut above - lots of trim and detail. Went to Pittsburgh and Philly a couple weeks ago - many unremarkable homes (unpretentious) in wonderfully vibrant communities. Our friend's home - pictured - was a row house - they shared a lawnmower, ladder etc. If it was the sabbath they turned on the stove for the neighbors - if they locked themselves out of the house they would borrow their key from the neighbors. No McMansions, just people that care. These people are wealthy beyond measure. Single pane glass....See MoreSombreuil
