bump-out Kitchen cabinets

Hi Everyone,

I am sure this is a silly question, but I wanted to throw it out there. Thanks in advance for weighing in.

I'm remodeling my kitchen and I had plans to bump out my cabinets by 3" around the cooktop. My dad, AKA contractor, decided last night that 3" is too much and I need to but back to only a 2 1/2" bumpout. I know I'm splitting hairs here. My question is for anyone who has put a bumpout in your kitchen, how big did you make it?

3" is fine, but your cooktop manufacturer, not your dad, is the boss here. They have specific clearances from combustable walls. Look it up, please.

In addition to clearances mentioned above, keep your aisle widths in consideration, and not cabinet to cabinet but counter to counter (since counters have an overhang.)

I like the idea of bumping it out a little and making it look like furniture. It's not like you have to protect that view of the dishwasher, so it could end up working nicely on both fronts. The only things to think about are the practical considerations. Don't bump out too far of you'll impede the dw and not be able to stand at the hutch and empty the dw into it, whch is I think what you'd likely want to do. And ensure that there's enough clearance in the aisle way between the hutch and island / work table. It looks a bit tight in the picture but I think it's probably just the camera angle.

Thanks for the reply everyone, I believe I'm going to go with between a 2 1/2"-3" bump out. I talked to the fabricator and was told on a 36" cabinet a 3" bump out will cost another 1.8 sq. ft so that's $180.00 based on my layout.

You may not like piano hinged cabinets, for whatever reason, but the fact of the matter is that they remain the most popular corner choice for a reason. They provide the best access to the most usable amount of corner storage that your kitchen can have. A single 36'' super susan can hold an entire pot and pan collection, and you can get even the big stockpot in and out. Or it can hold a small applince addict's blender, crockpot, griddle, rice cooker, backup coffee maker, Foreman grill, food processor, and still have room to spare. For an upper, a digonal corner cabinet has a relatively small door compared to the internal volume that it contains. It can hold a lot of medium sized objects, but they are more difficult tl get in and out. The L shaped corner with the double hinged door provides full access to every bit of the room, and you can put objects as deep as the entire shelf into the cabinet and still easily get them in and out without twisting them on their sides to fit through the door. Examine your ''dislike'' and get over it if you want the most function from your kitchen.

Agree with Sophie. That bump out of the cabinetry over the range for the microwave would impede cooking IMO. I know I would bump my head on the microwave with it sticking out that much further (6" additional, right?). I don't know what your kitchen looks like, but there are numerous other better functioning locations than OTR. Here are a few ideas: ^next to the range but not blocking use or access to the entire range top ^In its own quick prep station away from the main cooking areas of the kitchen ^near the fridge completely away from the range.

If you decide the bump isn't quite enough, you can cheat a little by increasing the overhang of the counter edge.

Your hood will need to be bumped out by the same amount of space. Install a 2x4 behind the hood, wrap the edges in stainless steel (can be cut at HD, Lowes, etc.) in order to bump out the hood.

Why are you just bumping out the cooktop? Many people on this forum have done deeper counters, i.e. 27" deep instead of the 24" deep for the entire counter run (they also bump out the uppers by 3" to match). If you bump out only the cooktop, are you creating two corners sticking out that you will often be hitting with your hip?

Wow! Thank you everyone for your responses!

I'm not doing the entire cabinet run because I'm using the cooktop as a focal point and am pulling it forward just a little to really set it off.

The cooktop installation guide indicates that either location is fine. I will have enough clearance. The bumpout is purely aesthetic. I'm clumsy but rarely bumped my hips on counters like this at other homes I've lived in.

As for aisle width, that's another area I was really concerned about. I set up dummy cabinets at the counter depth to help understand the space before I ordered my cabinets.
