Backsplash woes - update
Comments (8)I am not sure of the square ft., math never was my strong suit. But the counter is about 15' long, and it's about 18" tall between the counter and the upper cabs. Tile will only go along 14' of the counter though, because we're stopping the backsplash where the cabinets stop and the overhang starts. The height of the backsplash of course, will be reduced where the window is over the sink. That part is around 7.5" tall from counter to underneath the window sill. Then we have a small "cubby" that is about 2' wide and the same 18" between the counter and the upper cabinet. When tile guy spoke to my GC - my GC asked how come he bid so low? His response was that he gave me the price as if he was going to do more work there (he also does tile floors, bathrooms, etc). My interpretation of that was that he is hoping to do more work for my GC - who just so happens to be a Home Depot sub-contractor. Maybe he is hoping to get some work for Home Depot? As far as what exactly it is, it's a 12x12 mosaic sheet with random sized tiles, and the decorative piece is about 10x4" on a mosaic sheet, with random sized rectangular tiles. It's a very simple design and should require minimum cutting (I think!) I should've added that we are paying direct for the tile. He is to supply the grout and sealer and labor. There's a pic of it using the link below - because I *still* can't seem to figure out how to embed pics. LOL I just took 3 pics of the tile and you can see all 3. Bill: Thanks for agreeing with our decision to get rid of tile gal - it means alot coming from you. Makes me feel even more confident that we made the right choice not to use her. ---Boxie Here is a link that might be useful: my backsplash tile...See MoreDo I Need BackSplash? Help with Suggestions!
Comments (27)Posted by budgeteer_s (My Page) on Wed, Dec 31, 08 at 18:18 Thanks for all your suggestions. I wanted so much to follow with ci_lantro's suggestion because then I'm done. I'll gladly let you snatch that paint brush out of my hand. ha ha. But at the same time if a little tiling will tie up the project, then I'm game. jodi_socal: I'm a little disappointed when you said fire and ice won't work. I just LOVE that F&I BS. But then agin, I think I know all along it's a little too much for my kitchen. Caryscott & petra: Thanks for the picture petra, it says a thousand words. Is spectralight glass tiles? Prices are pretty reasonable. What about that milk green color? will it work? maybe with some garnet pieces sparingly mixed in. I will take some pictures and post two HD Behr's paint card to aid in the discussion of color. Thanks again ALL! Correction: My tiles were Alfagres: Gema4x4: different from what caryscott posted: I loved what caryscott linked:...See MoreKitchen Backsplash Woes- advice needed
Comments (15)Thanks for all the comments so far. I will admit some of the remaining issues I may not have noticed much if the overall job had been better to start. However it was initially much worse- this is the improved version after the most obvious stuff has been fixed. So in all fairness there may be some of the whole, "once you notice it, it stands out more" scenario going on. That being said, given there are so many remaining little issues (below are a few more examples, but still not all) is why I'm still leaning towards asking for further repairs or a re-do. I'd welcome any further thoughts though. (I really do want to be reasonable.) Is it really unreasonable to want to be satisfied with something so "in your face every day" after spending hundreds of thousands though? Plus as London Staging and Design, LLC mentioned, the tile being an issue at re-sell is also a very real concern. Oh, for those that mentioned the tile was a poor selection- we didn't pick the tile. The tile wasn't up, but was already selected by the builder by the time we put an offer on the house. Thanks again....See MoreHelp with Back-splash
Comments (3)OH BOY. I'm sorry I know you must be unraveled, but realistically it looks more like the counters dont go with your kitchen as they are brown tones and everything else looks black white and gray. Why did you leave the granite backsplash up? that would help minimize it a bit I think.. We need to see the whole room....See MoreRelated Professionals
