Questions about a new bluebird house....

I recently got a nice bluebird house with a see-through plastic plate inside the door you open, so you can watch them without them falling out. I really don't care for that....but I left it in. Today I realized that a house wren had built a nest of twigs in there. I pulled it out, which wasn't easy since that piece of plastic is in there. My question is this: Did I wait too late in the season to put this box up? (I put it up around mid-april). We have bluebirds around, but I'm wondering if putting it up late just encourages wrens to use it? I'll close it off or take it down if you think it's just too late for this season.

Thanks.!
