Can this tree be saved?
Comments (8)i cant really tell the canopy from that behind ... i almost wonder if its historically been topped ... the depth of the pic is just confusing ... the broken branch looks like wind damage.. or mechanical [big truck tear?] ... its not a rot issue ... as noted.. the ants are the best sign that something else is going on ... either they were farming aphids ... or the tree is rotting on the inside ... they are advantageous... not causal .... listen .... all trees are disposable .... its brand new to you ... if it continues to displease you ... after next year... just get rid of it ... dont go all tree hugger.. on a tree that pisses you off... be done with it but i wouldnt go making decisions on your 2 months with it ... its fall... [coincidental to you thinking its been going downhill a month ago].....probably been a long tough year weather wise ... for many of us .. etc ... if you come back.. always try to tell us.. where you are ... sometimes it matters... ken ps: that is not a big branch .. lol .......See MoreCan my tree be saved?

Comments (5)I'm not sure it is in danger. It looks green. If that is the root ball, it's not planted too deep. Couldn't you just sweep away the excess mulch, trim off any metal or burlap around the root ball water it, deal with any girdling roots, (There are advantages to having the rootball out of the ground!) then build a raised bed/berm with a gradual slope around it?...See MoreCan these trees be saved?
Comments (11)the root flare needs to be at the surface ... without the application of a mulch volcano ... https://duckduckgo.com/?q=root+flare&t=ffcm&iax=images&ia=images https://duckduckgo.com/?q=mulch+volcano&t=ffcm&iax=images&ia=images tree trunks are not made.. to be buried .. basically.. they need to be dry.. not constantly moist by deep planting or the mulch ... so the first thing that needs to be done.. is to gently pull back the mulch.. and find out where the root flare is ... perhaps take some pix.. and bring them back here.. for more advice ... dead parts are dead.. and should be removed ... a tree saw and good ladder.. and a helper to hold the ladder ... should take care of the dead stuff ... once the dead parts are removed.. you should be pleasantly surprised how much better they look .... most likely they are severely stressed ... fert is not a response to such ... ken...See MoreMarie Tulin
