What type of weed and how to kill?

Hi, can anyone tell me what type of weed this is and how to kill it in floratam grass. I live in central florida. I'm thinking it is nutsedge but not sure. It has small thorny balls. Will atrazine kill it?

Yes, looks like nutsedge to me too. Don't know about the atrazine, but there are sprays that will kill it.

Atrazine has minimal effect on nutsedge. You need a herbicide that has halosulfuron (Hi-Yield Nutsedge Control or SedgeHammer) or sulfentrazone (Ortho Nutsedge Killer) as active ingredients. As sedge is neither a broadleaved weed nor a grass, you need a herbicide that targets this plant specifically.

Its fairly common to get weeds in a newly seeded lawn. I would just wait for the grass to germinate and focus on growing healthy grass. Eventually the grass should outcomplete the weeds. Especially if you mow high and water deeply and infrequently.

This just showed up in my yard in Gun Barrel City, TX in the last 2 years and is taking over! Never seen anything like it. It is spiky and will stick your feet if you walk barefoot on the grass.
