Definitely a species of Camassia aka Camas or "Wild Hyacinth" (the colloquial common name in the PNW). A mid-late spring bloomer, depending upon species to about 12 to 18 inches. Pretty hardy and trouble free. Bulbs are widely available from the major mail order bulb houses like Brent & Becky's, Van Engelen, McClure & Zimmerman and generally pretty cheap. There is a white form also (but I don't grow that). My purple one sometimes sets seeds. It also benefits from a very hard prune every two years and sends up fresh and vigorous canes. Yes Bananafan I dare say we have a lot of unique native plants down here, but I am always interested and awed by the variety of the plants of nth america esp the wildflowers. I very much admire the resilience of keen gardeners there who go thru a winter I can only imagine, here in sub-tropical queensland, which is about as balmy as Floriday, I suppose. Anything you ever fancy in the line of seeds that I can help out with, just mention, I can only try. EXCEPT bananas :-(

Does anyone know if it's the same one that grows in the Southern states? I used to have one that I got from a roadside ditch in Georgia. I loved it and would like to get another one.

I can't find stocks here, well, most of the time anyway. And then, they aren't the tall ones I love. Same with Snapdragons. The ones they sell here of both plants are short. One nurseryman told me it is because of our strong crosswinds - they tend to blow the tall plants over. I told him, that's what garden stakes and twist ties are for! :) But, we do get a pretty good variety of Sweet Allysum, although white is my favorite. It shows up more as a border plant. And most years they reseed themselves. I bet your flowerbeds are gorgeous, Lavender_Lass!
