Red / purple shrub substitute for purple leaf sand cherry

I have a purple leaf sand cherry shrub that is very old. I
have always trimmed it to be pretty short, no more than 2 feet. It is somewhat
in the way of a new garden accent I had installed. Blocks the line of sight. But
the reddish purple color is the perfect foil for the rest of the plantings. That
bed is mostly perennials, but I like to have a couple of anchoring shrubs.

If I remove this, I want to replace it with the same thing in
a different part of the bed. Someone told me that these were trendy at the time
this garden was made (about 28 years ago), but that they are not popular now. That
made me realize that I don’t think I have seen one offered anywhere in a long time.
Is this true?

I would also like to know if there is any other shrub I am
overlooking that has a similar color (dark red / wine / purple), and stays
small. I know there are barberries, but I am pulling those out. Thanks! .
