Comments (68)Jamie, I'm late to the game but am SO down with this. I work from home and used to be very organized (thanks in GREAT part to this forum!) So much so, that I had an Access database that I would use to designate which box, in which room, seldom used items were in. (How anal is that?!?!?!) If I didn't kind of sort of know where something was, I would look it up in the database & voila! But in recent years, we've had some lifestyle changes including my 91 y/o mother moving into assisted living. And so I have "inherited" some of her things (that either I wanted or she wants & doesn't want to keep at the assisted living place) and do alot of "hands on" care for her (IE doing her books, refilling her pill boxes (we have four of those weekly thingies), keeping track of her medical info, etc.) That's one reason I've ramped up the usage of my PDA over the past ~1 1/2 years. Since she's legally blind, but her mind is pretty good, I try to keep good notes about how her hearing aids work, how her cell phone works, etc so if she encounters problems, I can hopefully walk her through troubleshooting over the phone, rather than make a special trip over there. (Not that she's that far away, but I do see her twice each week & work full time. So I tend to get disgruntled if I have to make a special trip b/c she ran out of pills.) Plus, since she made her living "doing books", she's often asking me about this investment or that bill & I have to stay on top of things & it's helpful to have the info in the "Palm (TX)" (hehehe!) of my hand. Unfortunately, the "physical" aspect of my organization has suffered. :-0 My office is the worst, probably because I spend so much time there. My husband is always asking me to work on it. Over the past year (I'm SO ashamed to admit this...) my idea of "working on it" has been to stuff all the clutter into shopping/grocery bags & shoving them into the closet or the bathtub of the bathroom that's right next to the office. (Bowing head in shame.) Having said all this...here's a video I took this morning of my office...it's password protected & the password is 'gardenweb'...(all lower case) Here is a link that might be useful: RoxieL's Office 8/21/08...See MoreWondering if anyone else who works encounters this problem
Comments (28)Ah, the world of work. It's a crazy place. I remember when we had a meeting in a room that had a glass window to the hallway. The snacks for our meeting break were on a table in the hallway, thoroughly covered and wrapped. It was obviously not meant for passersby. During the entire meeting we watched as people walking down the hall helped themselves. At first they just kind of wiggled a finger under the plastic wrap. As that got looser, they went in for a little more. each person unwrapped it further and pretty soon it was a feeding frenzy out there. I was pretty appalled by it, although those of us in the meeting room who were facing the window were in hysterics at the comedy of it all. The people with their backs to the window couldn't understand what we were laughing at. Then when our meeting took a break and went out to eat what was left, we could see people peeking around corners for us to leave so they could swoop in for the remainders. After that we kept the snacks in the meeting room. Frankly I wished things like showers, retirement parties, birthdays, etc. would take place outside of work. They are such time wasters and you feel as if you must participate. I wish no one ever brought doughnuts and cookies and candy to work. It is so hard to resist when you have to walk past it a hundred times a day. Outside of work I would never eat a doughnut, but when I can see and smell them I eat three. And don't get me started on all those people taking up collections for someone;s retirement party, engagement party, wedding party etc. I am sure over all the years of my career I shelled out a thousand dollars or more. I was already married (and divorced!) and had kids when I went to work, so there was no payback. I left when my job was eliminated (and then decided to retire), so there was no goodbye party either. When I worked for a small nonprofit there was no budget for parties. Since I had one of the highest level positions, I felt compelled to buy most of the goodies. Leadership, and all that. Every birthday set me back $50. I'd load up on frozen TJs desserts rather than expensive bakery items. Oh well, I am just glad I don't have to haul myself off to all that craziness again. I like the idea of putting names on each donated items so those who are eating and not donating may feel awkward (but I doubt it)....See MoreThose who move plants (McTavish? anyone else?)
Comments (21)In all the moving of hosta I did, I never noticed one of them shrinking the next year. They always came back bigger and better. I followed Ken's tutorial..but NEVER managed to get a root ball near as complete as his pictures. Often times what I managed to unearth--the dirt fell away from and I had roots---but not the finest small ones that keep the hosta from drying out and showing no signs of the move. I did get many looks and questions about leaves bound with masking tape!! I did notice the ease of moving AGAIN a plant I moved the year before...it takes them awhile to settle in. That always made me feel better--less root loss I figured. My space is under 80 year old burr oaks. I water once a week rain or not. I hunt slugs with ammonia and a course or two of slug bait each season..other than that they are on their own. I don't even do a fall cleaning. Come spring I blow out my beds with a leaf blower and await the new growth. I am in the middle of MN zone 3/4 Here is my newest bed. I think it is about five years old. It seems to grow the slowest. It must be in the most shade between the trees and the house. The green between the bed and the house is all moss. It has TWO downspouts for me to contend with. For all its shade it seems to be the WORST for seedlings taking root. I may never "tame" this bed. I began making it a variegated: white/green bed but as you see stuck a couple of my favorite yellows after a year or two, and added the ajuga to help combat the seedlings. It is the one bed I can see from my bedroom window. I decided I should have a view. I am not sure it is working. There is nothing NEW. It all came from other beds, parts or whole transplants....See Morebpath
